Path to the nomination: Did Cain’s end yesterday?
Washington Post ^ | 08:45 AM ET, 11/01/2011 | By Jennifer Rubin

Posted on 11/01/2011 7:09:51 AM PDT by DBCJR

Herman Cain was in the center of a firestorm, largely of his own making, yesterday. He knew before he entered the presidential race that he had a sexual harassment settlement in his past. He knew, ever since Politico started questioning his campaign, that a story was afoot. He knew he had to get the story out quickly and truthfully. And yet, by the end of the day, the business executive peddling his leadership skills and know-how looked somewhat like the hapless PBS executive who eventually got ousted for screwing up the Juan Williams firing.

...

Iowans don’t need to believe he is innocent of sexual harassment to vote for him. But they do need to trust him. Virtually everything that happened yesterday with regard to this issue served to damage his trustworthiness. Beyond the point of no return? We’ll find out.

This should serve as a warning to all the vanity candidates (i.e., those without experience who run essentially as celebrities) in this and future cycles: A presidential nomination process is brutal and serious stuff. If they think there is no downside to competing, they are wrong. They may, at the end, come out diminished people, less respected and liked than when they went in.

Some people call this unfair and harmful to our political process. I disagree. If unserious and ill-prepared candidates try to take the voters for a ride, don’t bother to understand the issues or even their own weaknesses, they pretty much get what they deserve. And if voters bury their heads in the sand and vote for them anyway, they deserve what follows as well.

If he had said from the beginning something like, "Yes, of the tens of thousands of men and women I have worked closely with at all levels of business over the years there have been only two claims of improper behavior made while I was with the restaurant association. I believed then, and I believe now, that I did not act in an improper manner and it was an unfortunate misunderstanding on the part of the individuals making the accusations. The matter was investigated by management and no evidence of improper behavior on my part was found. A settlement was reached with the two individuals and no admission of wrongdoing was made, because none happened. And that's the end of it."

This is pretty much exactly what Mr. Cain said on Greta yesterday (except that there was a settlement with only one person). How much time elapsed between "the beginning" and when Mr. Cain made this statement? Less time than has now elapsed since Mr. Cain's statement, your heaving sobs notwithstanding.

Well, obviously the Perrywinkles and the Paulies are continuing to perpetuate the lie. But, I don’t think the general population will buy into this smear. Some evidence...cain’s fundraising.

And, I guess you support Ricardo? He is running an actual campaign...or are you stupid enough to overlook the fact that he is WINNING? Nice try, now if only you’d stop making a fool of yourself every time you speak...

I’m actually trying to tell you something helpful. You are part of Cain’s “base,” meaning people who have moved their fanatical personal attachment from Palin to Cain, and nothing will shake you.

But the rest of the world is not going to be so tolerant of his mistakes, and unless he can show that he’s a little more professional, he’s gone. Like it or not, that’s how life happens. So if you love him, tell him to get help.

You say his poor handling didn't help his case...

He has handled it fine...people are sick and tired of the double standard, Clinton was given a pass by everyone in the media. Including rape and dropping pants and asking for a kiss.

Something that may have happened 12 years ago which was not necessarily sexual in nature (as the article says)but just made some dumb ass woman uncomfortable is for the stupid and liberal to believe. Time for you get some politically astute knowledge or else Cain is not your candidate and you are hoping it knocks him out...

***His bumbling all day yesterday is the bigger issue. And, the author is making that point.****

We are all so happy to hear your opinion but the majority of conservatives think opinions such as your are just so much blather. And as a female, its true that most liberal women are homely as a mud fence..Its been that way since the 60's...Hell, I am no raving beauty, but am more attractive than most liberal females...and I am 72

You are obviously looking for a way to dislike Cain. None of his answers constituted a different story. He did not sexuallt harass anyone. A disgruntled employee threatened to sue and a severance agreement was arrived at... none of those things are inconsistent nor are they different stories.

Be sure and vote for Romney or Perry so Obama can be pres again

Let’s see, the very fact that liberals make an accusation of a black conservative is evidence that he is innocent.

No, not going to go there.

However, I will agree that a liberal who exonerated Clinton has no business attacking anybody, whatever color, whatever political persuasion, for which there is no suspicion of anything less than that guy. But, I have the problem of being consistent.

This is pretty much exactly what Mr. Cain said on Greta yesterday (except that there was a settlement with only one person)

After issuing a non-denial denial...and then denying it ever happened...and then denying that he knew anything about any settlement... Fourth time's a charm?

Don't double down on your stupidity by trying to continue the smear.

Heaven forbid.

But his poor handling of the charges didn’t help his case at all.

Gee NEWBIE...I am SHOCKED to hear you criticize Cain.

Not.

The great thing about FR is we can go back and look at a poster's posting history and yours is one Cain criticism after another. However, yours isn't the best judge of intentions since you thought Palin was running (I would have told you she wasn't going to...and did many others). Looks to me like you are a bitter Palin supporter...so forgive me if I don't take your biased word for how you PERCEIVE he is handling the situation.

There is a lot to be skeptical about with Cain.

Looks to me like you are a bitter Palin supporter...so forgive me if I don't take your biased word for how you PERCEIVE he is handling the situation.

And I'll be sure to take your Cain worship into account when considering your replies as well.

I never made any statement regarding Cain’s innocence. You are manufacturing that. My logic compares the treatment of a white man vs the treatment of two black men by Liberals. If all were supposed “equal” then the further inference would be all were guilty or all were innocent. Taking that assumptive leap, which is unwarranted, one is left with the logical conclusion that all are guilty because Clinton was guilty. There is no logical way that you can claim I stated that Cain was innocent.
