You don't need to be a Boston Celtics fan to appreciate the way Chris Herren has turned his life around. The Fall River native lived out every New England basketball fans' dream when he played for the Celtics after being drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1999. Herren's dream didn't last long. He only played for the Celtics in 2000 and 2001.

Three years later, in December 2004, Herren hit rock bottom. He was charged with charged with possession of heroin and driving under the influence in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Incidents like that were common in Herren's life, he recalls in "Basketball Junkie: A Memoir," written by Herren and Bill Reynolds. Now, there's a documentary about Herren, "Unguarded," which was shown for the first time this week on ESPN.

Chris Herren has long been a favorite of mine.

He played for Fresno State. Unbelievable player. He has been fighting drugs for a long time. I’m so happy he is clean ... hope he stays that way.

I plan to buy his book for hubby for Christmas.

Do you know when it will be on? I know hubby and son would like to see it also.

We watched a lot of Herron while he was in Fresno. I think he was here for a speaking engagement last year.

I just want to say, though this has nothing to do with sports, that why is it that some people insist that ‘Celt’ be pronounced ‘Kelt’ when everyone knows it’s the Boston ‘Seltics’!!!

I hear what you are saying, but I still think you should take a look at the ESPN special. Herron seemed to have a genuine epiphany.

And don’t forget some of our most beloved conservative leaders suffered from substance abuse and went on to redeem themselves.
