Apparently gunning down stray dogs on the streets wasn’t enough for the dog unfriendly officials of Cumberland County, North Carolina.
Now they want to slay, within 72 hours, every dog that comes into the shelter who is, or appears to be a mix of:
American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiller, Akita, chow chow, Doberman pinscher, German shepherd, Great Dane, Presa Canario, Siberian husky or mastiff. There’s a convenient catch-all pit bull category as well.
They’re not doing it yet, despite what you may be reading on the misinformation highway.
But they’re talking about it.
The county’s Animal Control Board is recommending that authorities limit the adoption of the above dog breeds, or, as one county official referred to them, ”attack animals.” (Clearly, they haven’t met many Great Danes.)
The idea is only in the discussion stages, but many websites are reporting –erroneously — that the new policy goes into effect today.
“I’ve probably had 1,500 emails,” said John Lauby, director of Cumberland County Animal Control. (Here’s hoping he gets about 150,000 more.)
Lauby told a Fayetteville Observer columnist that misinformation on the Internet led people to believe the county will ban adoption of pit bulls and other breeds starting Monday, and immediately euthanize any members of those breeds in the shelter.
In reality, the county hasn’t taken that medieval step, it’s just considering it.
“We’re looking at a list of animals used as attack animals,” County Commissioner Charles Evans said. “It has been suggested that something needs to be done about those.”
The recommendation would have to make its way through a committe and then require approval by the county commissioners before going into effect. But it’s scheduled to be introduced at a meeting tonight. (6 p.m., at Cumberland County Animal Services, 4704 Corporation Drive, Fayetteville).
Lauby said animal control constantly receives calls from residents complaining about dogs behaving aggressively or running loose, preventing people from getting into their cars.
“We have an inordinate number of pit bulls in the county that are chasing people, chasing dogs, they’re on school grounds and generally bother people,” he said. “The reality is that about 80 percent of our calls are related to that particular breed.”
Complaints from the public also led Cumberland County to hire an outside contractor to capture stray dogs in and around Fayetteville — a massive roundup that started in August and, at last report, led to more dogs being gunned down than caught alive.
Fayetteville doesn’t have its own animal control department, instead relying on the county office to handle dog-related issues.
As I’ve implied before, that might be part of the problem — the problem, in my view, being not just too many uncontrolled dogs, but too many unenlightened public servants, who see dogs as foes and death as a solution.
Maybe it’s the army base influence. In any event, someone needs to usher Cumberland County into modern times.
In a way, the proposed policy — while it it lists some new ”public enemy” breeds, like the husky, and some returning ones, like the shepherd — would only formalize what’s already common practice in the county.
Since April, Cumberland County Animal Control has taken in nearly 1,300 pit bulls, but only 124 have been adopted. The shelter has taken in 180 Rottweilers since then, only 26 of whom were adopted. Of 96 chow chows received at the shelter since April, 15 have been adopted, according to the Fayetteville Observer.
The rest are euthanized.
Now, some want to make it official, banning the adoption of any of those breeds and guaranteeing a death sentence for all of them, or any mixes thereof — all based on what will likely be, judging from the wisdom they’ve shown so far, an uneducated guess.
In addition to complaints, worries about liability issues are also behind the proposal. The county fears it might be held responsible for any damage done by dogs adopted from its shelter. Most shelters handle that with a simple waiver.

Great Danes? Huskies? Are these people delusional or are they just haters of any dog larger than 20 pounds? I’ve never, ever met a vicious Dane or Husky.
I bought my gray and white Siberian Husky from a reputable AKC kennel nearly 13 years ago, and although she has a wolflike look and will bark at strangers until they are accepted into the house, she is a big baby who sits on my nieces and lets them play with her ears and paws. She shares her food and pet pillows with my cats.
My daughter’s American Staffordshire Terrier (aka Pit Bull) is also a cat lover, thinks he is a lap dog and in winter marches along on his leash wearing his blue sweater, politely greeting neighbors on walks.
Over the course of my adult life, I’ve also owned 2 German
Shepherds and a Chow, all of whom lived to a ripe old age and never bit anyone, although they did frighten a few just by looking scary, especially the Chow. I do always buy from AKC recommended breeders, but that is because I like the characteristics of certain breeds.
The people in Cumberland County, NC who promote this insanity need a course in responsible pet ownership, not to mention minding their own business instead of conducting doggie witch hunts-watching a few episodes of “Dogs 101” and “The Dog Whisperer” wouldn’t hurt, either...
Stray and free-running dogs in the country often become feral, form packs and become a danger to both humans and livestock.
I live in a remote rural area-our leash law is very strict because most lots are acreage and many people keep livestock. The fine for a loose dog is $500.00 per dog per occurance, and not because of joggers-if your dog runs loose and is not shot for running goats or sheep on someone’s property, it will likely get eaten by one of the two resident cougars who call this area home-they are a protected species, dogs are not. The leash law protects dogs as much as it punishes careless owners.

Never had a problem till the road was paved and joggers started using it. It is not a good jogging road as cars now fly up the hill here at a very high rate of speed. Won’t be long till some jogger finds he cannot jump into the 5 foot deep ditch on each side of the road to escape getting hit. We’ve seen quite a few car wrecks on this road.
Meanwhile, my dogs cannot establish their “territorial claim” and as a result coyotes and feral dogs, coons, which are worse are moving into the vacuum left and killing my chickens.
And like I mentioned, they don’t bother people walking, riding horses or bicycles, only joggers.
I don’t have any chickens, but many of my neighbors do-the raccoons and skunks are a real problem here, too and fenced yards do not keep them out. My neighbors herd their chickens at night into lean-tos fronted with game fencing or some other similar sturdy metal fencing with small openings that cannot be gotten through-I’m told that it works very well-have you tried something like that?
I come from a ranching family, but we had lots of chickens that we kids shooed into a big game-fenced area with a closed chicken house in it every evening. Gathering eggs while getting the crap scratched and pecked out of you, and counting chickens in the morning was also a kid chore-I do not like chickens to this day...
We had a Great Dane years ago (Atlas). The only risk you faced with him was that he thought he was a chihuahua and was trying to constantly climb into your lap. Great dog!

Our house has been broken into twice, We’ve had prowlers and strange calls in the night. All that stopped the day I brought in the dogs to run free.
Out neighbors were broken into till they also brought in dogs. The nearest neighbors are 400 yards away from us.
I am very much aware that burglars will call the law to get dogs removed before they hit a home.
I have been forced to increase security measures as a result.
I moved from the city, then the city expanded to get close to me. Bummer. I was here first.
Next some city boy will be calling the law because my roosters crow and wake them.
Thanks Joe. When I was a young I had friends with a Great Dane. Honey, - called that from the color of his coat and he was as gentle as a baby. I dislike Pit Bulls but the responsibility lies with the owners. We can’t let them start killing off certain breeds, it’s just a means of control.
I raised 4 children using the old Storkline baby cribs, folding walkers, etc, without any trouble. But I guess a few children had mishaps and now the government controls how they are made. The big NANNY in DC!

Several good hunting hounds would be a start -
I believe the “Plott” hound is the top bear-hunting dog (corrections welcomed!!!) A mountaintop family developed them - and somehow the bloodline was spread
We once had a large purebred Collie (not the Border Collie) - she was as tough with strangers (and garbage men) as our (later) hunting hound was
I recall my brother’s close friend walked onto our front lawn one dark night - “Heather” was inches from his throat when we called her off

Great Danes are being mixed with fighting dog breeds. I recently did a consultation with what is called they called an American Dane. Great Dane and American bulldog (Pit-bull).
Sorry...nope. Not taking on this particular dog. Way too dangerous and the shelter that released this rescue dog to this lady should be ashamed.

Not sure of your meaning, unless you were looking at someone elses post? I know you don’t approve of killing off breeds of dogs. I’m sure you noticed this is in Cumberland County, North Carolina.

I know that game wardens in South Florida avoided going on any property of any of the big ranchers and farmers
I know that the Sheriff’s Deputies is Western North Carolina would not even think of driving onto the property of some people in Transylvania County
Brevard had a leash-law - in town - but you did not think of telling a dog owner there what kind of dogs he or she could own
The Smokey Mountains is a place that you must respect
Yet everyone in WNC knew that if your dog(s) went after anyone’s cattle or horses - he was fair game - and you never complained

My niece breeds and sells GSs and I doubt the “bad-doggy enforcers” would be dumb enough to go up the trail to her house on the mountain and attempt to tell her they are going to kill her dogs.
Lot’s of liberal snowbird jerks moved to Florida - then resettled later for good in the Carolinas -
They have caused much trouble in NC - including electing that crazy leftie woman Governor who “just joked” about stopping elections for a term or two -

I know. You had told me those stories before - over the years.
I’ve always found it mysterious how people from Florida seem to migrate back and forth up the coast - to the Carolinas, and even further north states. I’ve just read of so many doing that and I wonder why. We here in Texas, all the people I know, have lived our whole lives here.

many people from NYC, LI, NJ, PA would drive to South Florida for vacation
As they aged - many moved to South and Central Florida
Then many of those stated spending summers in the cool mountains of WNC
As the economy changed under Jimmuh Cahtuh many then sold out (prices in FL went up after Cahtuh was booted out by Reagan) or rented their Florida properties and bought a home in Brevard or Hendersonville and played shuffleboard and went to the Asheville Mall
Unfortunately many of the snowbirds were libs - and many also union peeps
WNC has a great all-year-round temp and lots to do and has been a growth area for industries - as SC has -
State income tax - but lots of opportunities and a beautiful area for recreation, hunting, fishing, and bow hunting wild turkeys
(those guys are good with a bow!)
The blasted libs ruined NH, VT, WA, OR, and are determinded to turn the rest of the states into liberal dumpsters and union scam states

Thank you for the explanation. There are so many FReepers who have moved back and forth too. We get tons of snowbirds from way north of us but most of us don’t move north to those cold, cold states, lol.
