The Italian man, identified by lawyers in the case only as Antonio C, was rifling through an old chest of drawers when he made the discovery a few days before Christmas.
Notwithstanding the time that had elapsed since the betrayal, he was so upset that he immediately confronted his wife of 77 years, named as Rosa C, and demanded a divorce.
Guilt-stricken, she reportedly confessed everything but was unable to persuade her husband to reconsider his decision.
She wrote the letters to her lover during a secret affair in the 1940s, according to court papers released in Rome this week.
The couple are now preparing to split, despite the ties they forged over nearly eight decades they have five children, a dozen grandchildren and one great-grand child.

I think he’s being.. a bit hasty.
He will probably forget about it by tomorrow.
The kids should get DNA tests to find out if they are really who they think they are.
Never ever keep the evidence around.
Chances are neither one of them will be alive next Christmas and he pulls this?
The affair must have meant something to her,why else would she keep the letters?
I hope he ends up forgiving her and continuing with the marriage. I mean so much time has passed and yes she definitely made a huge mistake but 1940s? As long as she has been faithful since and especially today, I think she should be forgiven. I can’t say how I would react if I found out after 80 years of marriage that my wife cheated 60 years before (we are almost to 16 years). It seems like she is feeling very badly about it and perhaps should be forgiven. I don’t know. I guess I will see how other FREEPERS feel about it.
Its never too late to kick her to the curb! She probably wasn’t any good in the sack lately anyways..
That is soooooooooooo funny and I also love your tag line.
(The wife probably thought they were his letters...ha ha)
How do you know she’s been faithful?
Just because she got caught on this one doesn’t mean there haven’t been others.
You'll have a different perspective on life then!
Maybe the lover was an SS officer...or “Ill Douche” himself...
Probably knew about the affair since the ‘50’s, but wanted to wait for the kids to die.
Interesting. She wrote the letters but still has them? Guess they were never sent.
Maybe kids can talk a little sense to him. They may still be a little wet behind the ears, probably only 75 or so.
I can understand wanting to get divorced, but they should agree to wait until the children die before going through with it.
Well i can’t argue with that. You may 100 percent be right. However, I really have a hard time with a 99 year old getting divorced. I mean does he think he is going to get another woman? I think he should just be happy he made it to 99. A VERY small percentage of people make it to that age.
And never too early, either.
Life is so much saner and easier when you live alone.

I certainly don't want another one. He may not either. He may just want to live out his waning years in peace and quiet.
