Ability to forgive? How to you forgive a woman who allowed him to believe his marriage was sacred for over seven decades? How do you forgive not being allowed to make the decision to go ahead or dissolve the marriage when the adultery happened, but rather being trapped in a marriage for over 70 years, living a hoax?
I can’t blame this guy one bit. He’s probably thinking that living alone is better than living with a woman who would allow him to invest his entire life in a lie.

Now if he found used contraceptives, that would be a different thing. I checked my handy-dandy reference for contraceptives appropriate for the era mentioned...
They used sheep intestines for WHAT?
And a warning... Tansy infusions are dangerous.

You just wait until the soon-to-be ex-wife of 77 years finds out about his 40-something mistress! Hell hath no fury, etc.
To: Sacajaweau
Pure speculation...and that’s a horrible thing to assume about someone based on nothing but where they were born.

He’s got to be thinking, why did she keep the letters? If it was a brief fling that ultimately proved unsatisfactory that might be one thing, but it looks a lot more like she was wishin’ and hopin’.
Now all we need is a modern operettist to write the musical about it. “The Chest.” It absolutely has to be in Italian. English would not do.

I can’t blame the guy. Living with a liar and a cheat all those decades? Whew.
Better to set things right now than go to the grave with regrets.

It closes with an aged Geppetto, feeding a wooden puppet leg into the fire, looking sadly at the chest, and singing in a slow, low voice.. "Non ci si può fidare delle donne".
LOL!

She kept the secret...and the letters.
His choice...but he’s certainly entitled.
To: DeoVindiceSicSemperTyrannis
I’ll tell ya’ why he’s mad: Years ago he had a shot at some hot 20 yr old, thought of his wife, and passed...

In Italian, it's more poetic and alliterative. ;)
