Dog digs himself out of avalanche; turns up at motel 4 days later

A dog feared dead after he was swept away in an avalanche that killed his owner turned up four days later at the Montana motel where they had stayed before going backcountry skiing. Search and rescue team member Bill Whittle said he was 'positive' that the Welsh corgi – named Oly – had been buried in Saturday's avalanche and had managed to dig his way out.

'The avalanche guys were up there on Monday investigating and they were looking for the dog too and never seen any signs,' he said.

But on Wednesday afternoon, Oly showed up exhausted and hungry at the motel, four miles from the avalanche site. Robert Weinstein, owner of the Alpine Motel in Cooke City, an old mining town just outside Yellowstone National Park, said in an email to the Associated Press: When I first saw the dog, it was sitting in front of their room staring at the door.'

My stupid dog is currently standing across the street looking at me and wont come home. She knows she’s in trouble for getting off her chain and leaving the yard and is too cowardly to face the music.

His owner did die in the avalanche, but the owner left a widow and an 11 year old daughter. His last words to his wife were, “Head for the trees!” and she was saved.

His female owner survived the avalanche, her husband did not.

Not really understanding back-country skiing with your dog. Was the dog on a sled?

Amazing that Oly with his short legs, dug himself out, and found his way back to the place where his people had been staying!

Who's stupid? Your dog isn't likely to want to come home if she faces punishment, or even sharp words.

I had a beagle who kept running off in search of some delightful scent, usually tunneling under my fence to get out. At first she was hard to catch when she did this, but she started wanting to come to me and wanting to stick around because when I saw her I acted joyful and delighted. Dogs are dogs and beagles are beagles, and nothing will stop a hunting hound from chasing scent, but life got a lot simpler when she knew that coming to my call meant pleasure and petting, not scolding.

The reason he isnt back is because of “the music”. You cant expect any sentient living being to prefer captivity to freedom. If they see a way, they will go. When someone leaves a door open and my pit-boxer gets out, I get in the car and drive away with the door open.
That dog will come from hundreds of yards away and hop in. I drop the clutch, the door closes, I rub his belly and drive him home.
