I think the predecessor explains the antecedent. The 90s were a complete musical wasteland.

Us late Gen-Xers liked the 90's well enough. Most of us don't define the decade by the Top 40 list, though. And that's where these kids seem to be stuck.

I grew up in the 70s but always preferred the 60’s.

You are not yoked to a specific generation.
