Gingrich Hits Romney For Kosher Veto

Posted by CNN Political Producer Shawna Shepherd Jacksonville, Florida (CNN) – In a nod to one of Florida's key voting blocs, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich attacked Mitt Romney Monday for vetoing funding for kosher food in nursing homes when he was governor of Massachusetts.

"Governor Romney imposed activities on the Catholic hospitals against their opposition religious institution, refused them to allow right of conscience in Romneycare," Gingrich said. "Just as, by the way, he eliminated serving kosher food for elderly Jewish residents under Medicare. I did not know this, it just came out yesterday."

Mitt Romney is getting heat for a 2003 veto he cast as governor of Massachusetts to reject $600,000 in additional funds for poor Jewish nursing-home residents to get kosher meals.

At the time, Romney said he nixed the funding of about $5 per day because it “unnecessarily” would lead to an “increased rate for nursing facilities” — even as kosher nursing homes were complaining that state-funding-formula changes could force them to close their kitchens.

“I was outraged,” Jeffrey Goldshine, the retired CEO of a company that operated a kosher facility in Massachusetts, told The Post yesterday.

“For the elderly Jewish residents of a nursing home that have always been kosher — they should be entitled to continue.”

The Massachusetts Legislature approved an amendment to restore the $600,000 to finance the kosher meals allowing a “most vulnerable segment of our population’’ to “enjoy a special dignity,” according to the Jewish Community Council.

I am Jewish. But I am more concerned with Newt supporting illegal immigration.

This oddball attack could well backfire. Dangerous to enter ethnic/religious fray.

he is not and that was lies by the establishment and Romney and if you want to look more closer then you’;ll see since Romney has been in my state he now said that parts of the dream act is OK with him.

Funny how he attacked Perry on the same issue but now comes here where many immigrants are and he now does another flip flop.

Typical Romney take all sides of an issue and the dumb sheep will follow he thinks

I don’t know who is lying, maybe Newt himself, cause I actually heard him say all those things. Read the quoted article and say that ain’t true. And I am not a huge fan of Mitt either.

“Fifteen years after stopping legislation to get tough on illegal immigration, Gingrich now claims we can’t deport illegal immigrants because they’ve been in this country too long. Gingrich argued at the debate that illegal immigrants who “have been here 25 years,” have children and grandchildren here and who have been “paying taxes and obeying the law” should be allowed to stay.

“I don’t see,” he added, “how the party that says it’s the party of the family is going to adopt a policy that destroys families.”

Setting aside the issue of whether enforcing our nation’s immigration laws is “anti-family,” it’s hard to see why illegal immigrants should be rewarded simply because they have evaded deportation for so long.

As for “obeying the law,” does Gingrich not realize that the illegal immigrant in his hypothetical has been breaking the law every moment of those 25 years that he has been here? Not to mention all the other probable crimes — like identity fraud — that illegal immigrants regularly commit to remain in the United States...”

This is just coming to light on the national stage because NJ Gov. Christie signed into law a similar ruling for the FY2012 NJ Medicare, nursing home, elder care budget.

There is a pretty large petition drive going on in the NJ Jewish, Hindu and Muslim communities to restore funding for religious dietary law reimbursement levels for elderly Medicaid recipients and the institutions that house/feed them....

strange world.

LOL you posted politico.

I suggest you look at what Newt is saying about immigration, over 20 years etc, you seem to be another today, the other 2 were banned.

Yo have ignored all what Romney has done, liberal judges, to homosexual agenda to immigration yes immigration.

Standing there putting down Perry for his stance and now Romney is in my state you have ignored how he is now saying he is part of the dream act.

Do you honestly think you can deport 20 million illegals now?
Do you seriously think Romney would do anything, think about it and then look at his record on what ever issue want

Seeing as you are for Romney then tell me this seeing as Romney coudl not answer the question

what has Romney ever done for the conservative cause?

Name 5 issues and then name 5 issues which is different to obama’s

BTW My wife is form MA, I have lived in MA and we both lived there when Romney was Gov.
I’m also an immigrant from England who is here legally I might add so no need to tell me about immigration and how it works.

Govt health care which Romney is done is nothing shirt of socialism but you prefer to ignore that it seems and defend Romney

So I await your answers to those questions and try to not bring up Newt as we all know Newt has done much more for the republican conservative cause than flip flop establishment elitist RINO Romney
