What is it about soccer that it arouses such passions. To me it is the world’s dullest sport.

I see nothing of value in either soccer or Islam.

Some of the world's top soccer players now days are Muslim. Two of Real Madrid's top players are Frenchman Karim Benzema and German Mesut Ozil. Frenchman Hatem Ben Arfa is a solid player in the English Premier League. Even Sweeden's top player, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has a Muslim father. And a few years back, the star of Frnace's last World Cup win was the notorious head butting Zinedine Zidane.

Because it is the world's oldest expression of sporting tribalism.

If you look at the great rivalries in the world game (Rangers/Celtic, Manchester United/Liverpool, Real Madrid/Barcelona, Milan/Inter Milan, River Plate/Boca Juniors to name just a few) they all go back hundreds of years to issues that are much older than the sport itself. The football is sometimes a sidelight to age-old arguments.

I have no use for basketball except as played at the high school and low college level. To me, a last-team-with-the-ball-wins sport is dull. And with your screen name, it sounds like you should really enjoy you some calcio.

OTOH, women aren’t allowed to attend sports events. Maybe they’ll reconsider this ban so next time they can claim it honor killings.

73 less gee-haw-dits in the world seems like good news.
