Hunters Shoot Animal Rights Drone Out of the Sky
Gizmodo ^ | 2-16-12

The gun totin' boys at the Broxton Bridge Plantation hunting ground were planning on having themselves a good old fashioned pigeon hunt. South Carolina's unfortunately named S.H.A.R.K. animal rights group planned to expose them via aerial drone. Guess what happened.

The Times and Democrat reports that once the hopeful hunters knew they were going to be watched from above, they started to leave the private shooting plantation. SHARK decided to send up their drone anyway—above a group of cranky firearm-wielding southerners. Big mistake, SHARK. Their drone was quickly shot out of the sky:

"Seconds after it hit the air, numerous shots rang out," [SHARK leader] Hindi said in the release. "As an act of revenge for us shutting down the pigeon slaughter, they had shot down our copter." He claimed the shooters were "in tree cover" and "fled the scene on small motorized vehicles."

From the photos of the drone we've obtained, it looks like the damage was pretty light—though drones are very sensitive machines, and even a helicopter can be downed with small arms fire. Does this at least provide a possible explanation for the drone we lost over Iran? Are there pigeon hunts there? [The T and D]

If you’d like to be on or off this Outdoors/Rural/wildlife/hunting/hiking/backpacking/National Parks/animals list please FR mail me. And ping me is you see articles of interest.

Glad the gun-toten boys left, they probably wouldn't have fared well with the law. I know there are altitude restrictions for new fangled flying machines, wonder if any apply to these. Can I buy one and buzz my neighbors at will? Take pictures?

Lots of swimming pools in my area. Maybe I could get some nice pics from my own drone?

Good shootin’, Tex. Er, I mean you last remaining American men with testosterone in your blood, a ramrod for a spine and an unbeatable sense of freedom. Damn I’m jealous ‘cause I’m stuck in a blue state full of girlie men, lesbians, whackjobs and losers.

The funds raised in these FReepathons go to pay our current quarter expenses. But we're also going to try to replace some of our older servers and failing equipment this year so we're going to add a little extra to our FReepathon goals. John is estimating ten to fifteen thousand to do this and I'd like to get it all in place and working before the election cycle is fully heated up, so we'll try to bring in a little extra now, if we can, and the rest next quarter.

Many states have laws about disruptions during hunting season. It’s a crime. Don’t know if that applies to private game farms, which I presume this is. But I believe there are laws regulating altitudes, though I don’t know if it applies to these things. Better they left after shooting it down, but the sharks are far from innocent.

I suspect there will be a lot of casualties like this during dove, pheasant, pigeon, and turkey seasons. Yuk Yuk.

I don’t see where any shot hit the thing. These are liberals. I think it was actually a Controlled Flight Into Terrain they are trying to blame on the hunters.

In Oregon the animal rights folks were following hunters into the woods and filming them while screaming and yelling to frighten game away as a form of protest. Apparently they tried this on the wrong hunter, who didn't use violence, he simply led these pale out of shape college kids (some wearing only flip flops) on foot into the worst country he could find, and by the time they figured out he was playing them they were hopelessly lost and physically unable to continue. He actually took pity on them and directed them how to get back to the road, then left to go back to his vehicle and go home.

When these animal rights heroes got back to the world, they tried to press charges against the hunter and the police laughed at them. Then they tried to sue him, and the judge levied a judgement of $1 compensatory damages.

That was a lot of years ago, but if that guy's still alive I'll bet he hasn't had to buy his own beer from that day until this.

On what basis? He guided them into the wilderness and back. The juge should have awarded him guide fees.

LOL, ALF is whining that their surveillance drone (the operation of which is likely a violation of the Animal Enterprises Terrorism Act) is crashed by an incompetent conspirator, so the legitimate pigeon hunters are blamed for a final grasp at a manufactured crisis.

They were probably casing the place intent on arson.

Yep. It's against the law here in Iowa to interfere with a legal hunt.

In 1989 there was this one PETA dude on CNN talking about following deer hunters in order to scare away the deer. I wa in East Texas at the time. I would have suggested that he come down to East Texas or Southwestern Louisiana and follow Messrs Boudreaux and Thibidoux to their deer lease. As an added bonus, Mr. PETA Person would be a guest of Monseur (sp?) Fontenot for some gator hunting. Now what to use for bait????
