Yea well I didn't mind their teasing me, it's my fault for not spell checking. If I want to post again I have to re-learn how to do it right. Someone sent me a post link to HTML sandbox. I plan to print it out and use it. I also need to cut my nails shorter. God bless you and Thanks

The "h" in "history" should be pronounced because the word is accented on the antepenult. But in "historian" and "historical" the first syllable is not accented so "an historian" or "an historical" would be correct.

Actually, it's my impression that some people pronounce an unaccented "h" and some don't...so "a historian" might not be incorrect.

It also works in the middle of a word--"h" in "vehicle" silent, but "h" in "vehicular" pronounced.

methinks you are wrong
unsounded is different than unaccented.

That just begs the question--when is the "h" unsounded?

I'm not going to take something from Purdue as definitive. They won the Rose Bowl only once, and that was back in 1967.

It may be that pronouncing an unaccented "h" is more common in America than in the UK. I have a book which has a title starting An Historical Commentary... (published in England, but the author was a Canadian, or at least was living in Canada when he published the volume).

My preference would be to let each person do as he or she chooses on the matter. Hopefully Sebelius won't issue a mandate ordering one or the other.

a historian

Martin, being on your ping list does not give you the right to post private, personal photos. For shame! And I don’t drink that crap. At least get it right. It’s Cab. Sav. or a Pinot when I can afford it. Gawd...!

(Psst- can you send me some of that Pittsburgh whiskey?)

I took an editing class a few years back and they said that the “h” in history, and its variations, should always be pronounced and that the addition of the “an” was incorrect. It’s interesting, nonetheless.
