When most of us think of caring for the family dog, we have in mind a sedate walk around the block once a day, maybe an obedience class when he's a pup, a good brushing once a week and lots of hanging out together watching TV at night. And then there is that special breed of dog - the high-energy, need-a-job-to-do, groom-challenging kind that comes in all looks and sizes, but shares one commonality: He is undeniably high-maintenance.

My chihuahua is a mix of long/short hair and requires a brushing once or twice a week. Other than that, loves to warm my lap at all times.

We had two Dobermans several years ago and they were wonderful dogs. Everything you say echos our experience. Since then we have moved to German Shepherds. Those guys are the highest maintenance dogs I have been associated with. They do not like to be separated from their humans, fellow dogs, family cats, or anyone else they consider a pack member. They are in charge of security and they can't do their jobs properly if people go wandering off all the time.

Most of the “high maintenance” associated with Aussies (besides giving them enough attention) is vacuuming the carpets. Someone said that dog hair is a condiment of life! Mattresses? Hmmmm...I never thought of that. :-) I read somewhere that Aussies shed their coat every 6-8 weeks; I could believe that. When I brush them, hair comes out by the handfuls, enough to knit a new dog. At least, the coats stay clean and we rarely need to bathe them.
Our dogs are also “Velcro” and have attitudes typical of the breed. I can’t imagine having anything else.
Thanks for posting. We adopted a pointer-setter mix when our daughter’s marriage ended, and he proved to be a great challenge, but he was so lovable! He lived to be 16, as did our lab mix.
One of our neighbors took in a little male chihuahua mix and asked us to take him (he’s a little over 16 pounds and has a very long body, short legs and muscular build, so we’re thinking there’s some corgi in there.) The vet estimated his age at 5 1/2 years. When he gets excessively happy, it takes him about 5 minutes to stop vocalizing and bouncing around the room. He’s great with the cats, and he actually guards the house and yard.
I believe orange/red is he most common, bu there are black ones oo ;)
If I remember correctly, their names were Capalo and Tumalo.. no sure if he spelling is even right :p
The AKC doesn’t recognize/allow those colors in the ring so that’s probably why I’ve never heard of them, in spite of knowing several RR breeders.
Ya learn something new every day.
