Life on Mars found... and we’ve, er, killed it

BUNGLING Nasa chiefs are believed to have found tiny Martians — but KILLED them by boiling them alive.

Two spacecraft that landed on the Red Planet in 1976 are now thought to have detected live microbes in Martian soil.

Scientists at the time failed to spot the signs of life — and COOKED the bugs at 160°C during experiments. Now an international team has used modern techniques to re-examine data collected by the two unmanned Viking probes.

And biologist Joseph Miller, of the University of Southern California, said: “I’m 99 per cent sure there’s life there.

“To paraphrase an old saying, if it looks like a microbe and acts like a microbe — then it probably is a microbe.”

In the book "13 Things That Don't Make Sense: The Most Baffling Scientific Mysteries of Our Time" by Michael Brooks.

A clear case was made for the discovery of life on Mars. Also for Cold Fusion!

"Gases have been detected on Mars that could only have come from carbon-based life forms"

No. One of the return shots before the grinding showed a krinoid like fossil.

As for the color - before the initial images were returned, techs swarmed over the monitors to make sure the color they would display would be completely accurate. All of that in full view of the hoards of media people awaiting the first live color images from Mars.

When the actual images began to be displayed, the project manager with a cry of dismay ran to the monitors and cranked up the red to max.

Its a red planet, you know. Wouldn't want to disappoint tbe folks.

Gases have been detected on Mars

The methane gas detected has other explainations, according to learned scientists, and assorted experts.

I remember reading just the opposite at the time. The original video was off because the automatic calibration was geared towards terrestrial photography and artificially corrected the sky towards blue, they had to turn it off to get the accurate colors.

I searched but could find the article where Sir Arthur C. Clarke pointed out that rover pictures showed things that looked like seashells, roots, and seeds.

Wish I had archived the images. They don’t seem to be at space.com anymore.

And the spin goeth forth and multiplies ...

There was no automatic calibration - the monitors were maunally calibrated by techs using color test patterns - watched by many media witnesses.

Color test patterns are like that ... they are what they are ... geared only to what colors are in the pattern, not some auto-corrrection monitor algorithm. A monitor is a monitor, and are precalibrated only to test patterns, else why bother spending hours making sure the color is accurate when some mysterious algorithm is going to change it anyway?

Besides manually cranking the red channel to full solves nothing, serves only to reinforce a preconceived stereotype, leaving just the spin.
