From November of 1980, here is CBS's coverage of Election Night. Taped from WJKW-TV8, Cleveland. This is part 3 of 3.
Was that the night Americans had a “temper tantrum” according to Peter Jennings of ABC because a bunch of Democratic All Stars had gotten the boot? I guess that one came later.
On one of the networks I remember the shocked commentator exclaiming that he didn’t even KNOW anyone who had voted for Reagan. I always wondered if the irony escaped him?
Bump
Yeah Lesley, that was it. Four years of double digit inflation, high unemployment, failed energy policies and failed foreign policy had nothing to do with it.
Liberals are such morons.
that would have been 1994.
May that video be a preview of November 6, 2012. Possible, not because Mitt Romney is so much like Reagan, but because Obama is SO MUCH WORSE than Carter!
However, as El Rushbo said today....Last night’s victory speech was the best Willard has made in this entire 2012 campaign so far.
Harry Reasoner was so P.O’d he’d lost his ability to REASON!
And we’ve assumed in recent years that they’ve somehow have gotten worse.
They were just as bad. Dufus#2, who spoke immediately after Dufus One (Walter), said that Reagan’s support was “wide but not deep”... that’s how he described an (at that moment) 51%-42% thumping!!!!!
Dan Rather said, “Walter, when you say ‘Why did Jimmy Carter win’...”
He can’t even SPEAK what happened!!!
Four years of double digit inflation, high unemployment, failed energy policies and failed foreign policy
You comment sounds vaguely familiar - oh, yeah, we’re living through it again. Can any of the morons that voted obama see that?
Cronkite sounds like he wants to go drink a bottle of scotch and hang himself.
I remember 1980 was the election the media said was “too close to call” then it ended up being a Reagan landslide.
They do seem to be better at polling now.
That's a great question. One could go further and ask, do they even care?
I had plenty of time to think about Carter as I was sitting in line waiting to buy three bucks worth of gas in Seattle.
"On one of the networks I remember the shocked commentator exclaiming that he didnt even KNOW anyone who had voted for Reagan."
There is also the anecdote about the reaction in the New York Times editorial room. When the exit polls closed and the networks were predicting Reagan's win, the NYT editors all said the same thing: "I don't know anyone who voted for him." In the meantime, the poor stiffs in the mail room, shipping and receiving, and the clerks were all quietly celebrating that they voted contrary to what their bosses urged on the editorial page.
Why? Because Reagan tapped into their innate patriotism (which it's hard to lose if you didn't attend Harvard) and their common sense that Government is not benevolent but needs to be restrained.
Thanks for posting. Except for the Dwight Yoakam concert in Reno last Saturday night, this is about the best time I’ve had this week!
No, the “temper tantrum” occurred in 1994 when the Republicans swept the Democrats out of the House, gaining their first majority in the lower chamber in forty years. Newt became Speaker as a result of that election. Reagan’s election in 1980 was, if anything, an even greater shock to the media since for them he was like a crucifix on a strand of garlic to a pack of vampires. The next day really was a morning of rebirth in America for the rest of us.
We had a temper tantrum but it didn’t last long enough to throw Willie out on his ass.
I hope we don’t have a repeat. PRAY. HARD.
I might have had a case of beer, but wifey and I danced all night. Brings tears (of joy) to my eyes just remembering that night. I think we got the Senate as well.
