That's partly why Pons and Fleishmann were "laughed off the stage" in 1989. Plus, the big money is in hot fusion. That doesn't make it a fraud, hoax, or wrong. I equate it to where super-conduction was last century. It went from poorly understood novelty to useful and established property of materials.
