Rhinos in nations were they are legally hunted are not only healthy populations but they are increasing in numbers
In nations were they are ‘protected’, they have no intrinsic value and are poached freely
I suspect the real culprits are Chinese who use them in various medicinal concoctions. I think Rhino horns are supposed to make the make the men “horny.”
Nevertheless, this is now an international crises and we’ll all have to pay, somehow.

No, you are thinking of tiger penises. Rino horns are used to make the handles of daggers for muslims and sikhs.

Just Googled it up and from 2010 post on the National Geographic site read that the market shifted from Yemen, where it was used for knife handles, to China for medicines.
Chinese evidently use it to cure everything— except flagging libidos they say.

I think you're right about the daggers but I'm pretty sure that the horns are also used in the Far East for "medicinal" purposes.I'm not 100% sure however.I saw a rino on a photo safari in Tanzania in '81.The guide kept saying how surprised he was to see one because even then they were very rare.The guide wouldn't get any closer than about 1000 yards because he said they *will* charge a Land Rover and when they do,*they* win.I'll never forget that.

Friend’s daughter has a two year hitch in Tanzania as a Peace Corps volunteer reports home everyday by Skype. It’s Chinese using helicopters shooting the rhinos like fish in a barrel. All covered up by local governments who are on the take of course. She believes they will get all the rhinos in a year or so, including those in so-called ‘national parks’ in Kenya as well.
Kenya used to put a 24/7 guard on some of their rhinos. Not completely successful.
Then they tried tranquilizing the rhino & sawing off the horns. That helped.
Back in 1980, I visited with an American who owned about 1 million acres near Mt Kenya, with his own private game warden staff. He had more elephant & rhino than his range would support and had offered them to Kenya to restock the national parks.
Kenya told him, “Thanks, but no thanks. We could not keep them alive.”
