'May Day' protests turn violent in Downtown Seattle

SEATTLE -- Some May Day protestors are running rampant in Downtown Seattle, smashing windows at businesses and cars as they marched through city streets Tuesday afternoon.

Video from Air 4 has shown smashed windows at a Wells Fargo, a Downtown Federal Courthouse, and Niketown, among others.

KOMO News reporter Joel Moreno says he and his photographer had been hit with a paint bomb while covering the march and ensuing riot.

He says about 50 people clad in all black outfits were throwing paint at buildings and cars, marking the anarchist symbols, "but there were certainly others not dressed in black participating in criminal behavior."

The march itself began with about 200 people and then the group in black inserted itself into the middle of the parade body.

"They wasted no time," Moreno said. "They went about two blocks before they started damaging property."

Moreno said that's when he was hit with a paint bomb. But up ahead he started hearing glass shatter.

"We turned the corner and saw large storefronts at Wells Fargo smashed in," he said. "We saw a firebomb of some sort at the U.S. Court of Appeals where they went in and bashed the windows." Moreno said it looks like a firebomb was lobbed inside: "We saw smoke coming from inside the windows."

As protestors smashed windows at Niketown, store owners at nearby American Eagle store blocked their doors while customers were still inside in an effort to keep rioters out.

Police were using pepper spray, said a Seattlepi.com photographer who was caught in a melee.

There are no word on the number of any arrests.

Agreed rioters & looters should be shot on sight but not by the police but by shopkeepers & store owners. The Korean shop keepers in LA had the right idea during the Rodney King riots.

It’s called blow because some dork will sneeze
and blow a hundred dollars worth of coke off
the coffee table.

Why are many replies talking about shooting these guys? They are clearly doing us ALL a service. This is furthering the Administration’s stimulus package. These black-clad economists are merely carrying out their knowledge of the “Broken Window” solution to a recession.

This is no slam at you personally so please don’t take it as one.

But...it’s time for decent people to STOP surrendering the streets to mobs. I assure you if this bunch came at my place of employment bent on mayhem 5 or 6 of us who depend on it for our livelihoods would quickly reduce the number of rock throwing criminals significantly.

People should not be running away from these thugs. They should be volunteering to bring their privately owned weapons to work with them and actively defend the employers who’s businesses help put food on their tables and roofs over their heads.

Once a few of these maggots catch bullets the situation will calm down very quickly.

and our President is in Afghanistan now predicting and apologizing to our soldiers because some of them are going to die in the coming months before it’s all over ...

My heart just WEEPS for our soldiers in uniform serving — good and decent Americans sacrificing so much, while THESE vermin, running around causing chaos — yet will receive the minimal punishment for it.

This country is MESSED up!!!

Somebody tell me...what’s so constitutional about what these assh*les are doing?

********************************

I doubt than any of this group has read the Constitution. Many of them appear to be nothing more than thugs and criminals.

I do agree with your point in principle.

It’s not that easy, though, in this city. Even though Washington is an open carry state, the city itself is decidedly gun-unfriendly. Anybody discharging a firearm in defense of a business will get put through the wringer.

Most people have already left this area, not because we’re afraid but because the protesters are going to seriously muck up the bus routes with their march. Most everyone relies on mass transit here, not that many people drive into the city.

In a “demonstration like these” a shouting voice is lost in the noise, but the sharp sound of a 9mm is truly heard.

I think this situation calls for evil, scary, black, semi-automatic assault rifles, chambered in 5.56 or 7.62, with detachable magazines [detachable drums for the truly evil 'rethuglican'], bayonet lugs, and pistol grips.

I also think the estates of the perps should be held responsible for not only the broken windows, but also the expended ammunition.

In the end, our principles are all we really have.

And I have a hard time believing that even a Seattle jury would convict a business owner or employee who shot someone who was preparing to throw a firebomb an occupied building. If that’s true then your city is truly lost and you should be making plans to get out as soon as humanly possible.
