That's the beauty of it. It's a place to play.
It's owned by Eglan AFB and is protected airspace for their runways.

Isn't that the Cape St. George Lighthouse, Florida (Near Apalachicola)?

Don’t tell the Kalifornia wackos how nice it is in the South. We don’t need these people down here.

A reminder for Kalifornians & damn Yankees: The South is full of rednecks with guns. They don’t wash themselves or brush their few remaining teeth. There are swamps & mosquitoes. Lots of deadly snakes. The roads are all dirt. The nicest homes are trailers. Country music blares from every tractor.

And strangers are shot on sight.

*****************************************************
Hey there, except for the mosquitoes and swamps, you just described where I live in Tulare County California. Well, ok, we have blaring Mariachi music, but the rest of it is spot on. California’s inland is as Red as it gets. The crazy people live on the coast.

You failed to mention so many more things that they should be forewarned about. Your post makes it seem like a paradise compared to how it actually is.

What are you looking for? The water is better east of Destin. Destin is a vacation community, and considered very expensive, but really is the place to visit.

Just east of Fort Walton Beach FL is Oakaloosa Island, owned by Eglin AFB, but open to the public, except for a few small areas used by Special Forces for water landing training.
It’s beautiful and where the horses running on the beach scene was shot in the movie “Secondhand Lions”.
It’s about 5 miles of open Gulf of Mexico Beach with Emerald Green water, warm, and inviting, pictured in the opening post.
Seagrove Beach, FL is better, but more expensive, due to being the area where “The Truman Show” was shot.
There many retirees from all over the country that call Seagrove home.

If you're looking for rolling hills, then you'll be more than an hour away from the beach.
Sycamore, FL west of Tallahassee, Fl is about the hilliest area of Florida I know, and close to Torreya State Park.

If you like clear fresh water and floats down the river, then consider Manattee Road, FL near Manatee Springs State Park.
It's west south west of Gainsville, about 43 miles.

One other thing, you can't beat the BX and Commissary at Eglin AFB. It's one of the largest in the country.
The choices of merchandise are just fantastic. They compare or beat Ft Sam Houston BX and Commissary in San Antonio, TX.

You forgot to mention the proliferation of tobacco use and country western music. Surely those California people would never have any interest in relocating to this part of the country.

They'd be terribly unhappy, and it would break my heart to see them that way. For their own happiness, I would implore them to stay in California....

One of my favorites places to go!

Our family is heading there on vacation in about 6 weeks. By the way, we always tell people we are going to Destin. That way we don't spoil the secret that is Okaloosa Island!

The traffic and the crowds in Destin are just a little much for us.

you have a week to four days warning in advance.

building codes mean storms do not make a dent in your home IF you have upgraded.

These houses were built by the wealth of the oil industry in Dubai. I suppose when that wealth declines, these houses will be more affordable. I expect they will last a long long time in the environment they are in—very little rain.

They look like homes I’ve seen between Pensacola and Navarre on the Barrier Island road between the two Inter-coastal Waterway Bridges.

I never said it was a paradise, but it’s certainly not the sh*thole some of the folks here try to make it out to be. I was just pointing out that inland California is quite conservative. I live just down the road a ways from Jim and John Robinson, you know, the guys who run this blog (you did know that this blog is coming out of Fresno, Ca didn’t you)? If the San Joaquin Valley is good enough for the Robinsons, it’s good enough for me.

I also like the state your living in. I LOVE St. Augustine and the Keys the best. What lovely country.

They smoke out here, just not tobacco, but they smoke everything else!

And terribly unhappy about country music? Seriously? You ever hear of Buck Owens or Merle Haggard? They lived most of their years five miles east of Bakersfield, Ca. in the Kern River Canyon. For many years you could go hear them and many other C&W stars down at the Blackboard honkytonk in Bakersfield. This whole area is dustbowl descendants and they are the ones they coined the term “redneck” for. Heh, RFD is our favorite tv channel. Gotta watch those old Hee Haw reruns.
