Authorities in Louisiana say a man who starred in the reality television show "Swamp People" died from natural causes.

Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley says the parish coroner, Dr. John Fraiche, made that determination after a preliminary autopsy on Mitchell Guist.

Guist, who appeared in segments of the "Swamp People" with his brother, Glenn, died after collapsing Monday while working on a houseboat he was building on Belle River.

Authorities tell The Advocate of Baton Rouge, La., Guist had just launched the houseboat and was pushing it when he collapsed.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday in Gonzales.

"Swamp People," which airs on the History channel, features residents of Louisiana's Atchafalaya swamp country during alligator hunting season.

I didn't think "natural causes" was a legitimate ruling for cause of death. You could have a lot of individual causes which can be summarized as natural, like heart attack, aneurysm, cancer, etc., but listing "natural causes" is one step above making an official ruling of "up and died".

RIP gar catcher.

What one of us wouldn’t envy Mitch and going to meet our Maker with our *boots on* ...leaving for that new journey, doing what we loved the most.

The times I saw these two, they charmed my socks off by their sweet child-like innocence. Prayers for his brother left behind.

"The boy looks pretty rough for 48."

Thats what he gets for working hard and living off the land that god gave him to survive and NOT waiting for a gubmint hand out!!

One of the reasons I liked the show was him and his brother and some how that kind of living appeals to me.

But NO! it's my dads fault for not being a swamp people and I will never forgive him for that...LOL

Could someone explain why Swamp People is on the “History” channel (along with Pawn Stars, Finding Bigfoot, American Pickers, Ancient Aliens, etc.)? Then again, there’s no music on Music Television. South Park got it right again... The History Channel, where the TRUTH is History!

I thought about your question and I can only come up with one answer for why Swamp People is on the History Channel. It is because it is a tradition (i.e. alligator hunting) that goes back hundreds of years. During the show, some old snapshots are shown and the Swampers discuss the tradition. Pawn Stars and American Pickers “educate” the viewer on some of the antiques found. The items aren’t “ancient” history... but history nonetheless. As for Ancient Aliens and Finding Bigfoot.... no idea whatsoever.

There seems to be a lot more history on the Military channel.

LOL @ your dad.

They said Mitchell died of natural causes. I don't doubt that at all. It's probably a routine death for someone who eats swamp squirrels all the time. Especially that nasty-looking squirrel sausage they made.

Because those shows win them higher ratings, and commensurately higher advertising dollars, than their straight history shows ever did. Add in the fact that reality-type shows are cheaper to produce than the historical reenactment shows, and it's simple economics.

Natural Causes can be a final disposition or one made to rule out other means of death such as criminal acts, suicide, accidental etc. Finding it down to the nitty gritty may never be determined in some cases. In the mean time a ruling of natural causes meaning from conditions not involving murder, suicide, accidental, allows survivors to obtain likely needed immediate help such as life insurance benefits etc. The final cause as in M.E. closing case after all reports come in may be six more months or they may just close it after an ER exam.

It took months with my B.I.L. His death was mandatory autopsied because it happened at a DOE facility. Witnesses said heart attack. M.E. initial report was heart attack allowing family to start claims. Final ruling months later was still a heart attack.

In the mean time the M.E. that sees overwhelming evidence pointing to such likely things as stroke, heart attack, etc can rule it as such pending any further evidence or simply close the case if LEO and family are satisfied with his findings. BTW not all deaths require an autopsy. Doctors can take into account witnessed events such as heart attack or consider their medical history, family medical history, etc.

I did notice I think on one of the shows a pack of smokes in one of the brothers pockets. Look at his picture in post 3. I saw another picture somewhere from a different angle and it was Marlboros.

Some families also have inherited traits that can bring on heart attacks at an early age.

Quite a few of the shows are showing History but not in a dull lecturing documentary type setting. Pawn Stars has several history experts on it each episode and is good for old firearms history etc. American Pickers also goes into extensive history. If you'll notice the Pickers Mike and Frank are very knowledgeable about the history of many things they see. Yes they have even found pre-historic bones. Swamp People? Last night the Houma {sp} tribe father and son team were showing 200 plus year old techniques their tribes forefathers had used to hook Gators without metal hooks. Troy was showing his son the area his family had settled in the late 1700's.

Discovery and History do have shows you can learn from. Their shows in general sure beat whats on regular network these days.
