Transgender at Five Video
She first insisted she was a boy at the age of 2. "I am a boy" became a constant theme in struggles over clothing, bathing, swimming, eating, playing. Eventually, a psychologist diagnosed gender identity disorder.
Now Tyler 's parents allow him to live as a boy, and the 5-year-old is reveling in his new identity.

Kathryn wanted pants. And short hair. Then trucks and swords.
Her parents, Jean and Stephen, were fine with their toddlers embrace of all things boy. Theyve both been school teachers and coaches in Maryland and are pretty immune to the quirky stuff that kids do.
Transgender at five:I am a boy, she insisted at age 2. It became a constant theme in struggles with her parents, who eventually concluded she wasnt just a tomboy. Then, they had to figure out how to handle it.
But it kept getting more intense, all this boyishness from their younger daughter. She began to argue vehemently as only a tantrum-prone toddler can that she was not a girl.
I am a boy, the child insisted, at just 2 years old.
And that made Jean uneasy. It was weird.
I am a boy became a constant theme in struggles over clothing, bathing, swimming, eating, playing, breathing.
Jean and Stephen gave up trying to force Kathryn to wear the frilly dresses that Grandma kept sending. Kathryn wanted nothing to do with her big sister Moyins glittery, sparkly pink approach to the world. (Moyin attends school with my son, which is how I came to know the family. The Washington Post is using the familys middle names to protect their identity beyond their community, where their situation already is widely known.)

More parents letting kids run them instead of the other way around.
When children dictate reality to parents, the results are tragic.
The parents are flaming spineless morons.
wow. These parents are sick. I am so sorry for the child, she is doomed. May God have mercy on these children who are destroyed by their parents.
DNA proves WHAT she is..
What she thinks she is does not matter..
She could think she is a rock, but shes not..
2 + 2 = 4... when you come up with 5 your simply WRONG..
Gender Identity Disorder... I dunno but shouldn’t the very name imply that it needs to be TREATED!?
Letting a child inmate run the asylum!!
I love to read the Washington Post to find out just what the locals are saying about the election. I guess that does include the strange stories that they tell about strange subjects.
Me... I think that these stories are just so readers are not turned off by their politics.
PS: Wonderful fellow they have for the ombudsman...heh.
The child was and is in need of mental health help’
She is NOT a BOY. She IS a GIRL..
What if this child had declared and continued to do so that she was a dog? Then acted out on that premise? Would the parents play along then? Would the newspaper? As far as I am concerned this is child abuse.
The best theory that I have read so far would more closely relate Gender Identity Disorder to a birth defect than a mental disorder. If it is a birth defect then I do not believe that there could be a treatment.
The theory I refer to is that during gestation the childs brain is wired opposite to the childs physiology.
The theoretical cause of this defect is hormone imbalance in the mother during the pregnancy.
If Obama had a transexual child, it would look like Tyler.
The only reason for such a operation is if the child is born with ambigious sex organs. Its rare but does happen.
Totally ridiculous. The parents over-reacted to a persistent contrary attention seeking child’s role playing rather then staying calm and riding the wave until the phase passed.
I suppose the pregnancy may have started out as male female twins and one was absorbed by the other creating a chimera with all the male dna going to the brain. Just a theory.
Also if you transgender a young child, you are taking away the opportunity for the child of being the sex the child was born. What if when she is 12yrs old she wants to wear a dress and date a boy?
I also believe that this sort of thing is a birth defect. But I like to think positively that perhaps understanding the brain more will eventually allow development of a treatment that corrects the problem with the brain. It seems to me that this would be preferable to surgery on the whole body these people sometimes resort to as adults.
The biggest loss I see is that I the child is given so called sex reassignment surgery the child looses any future chance at procreation.
Also a lifetime of hormone replacement therapy is not with out risk.
The decision to have the surgery should left until adulthood when the individual can make an informed choice having weighed the risk against the benefits.
It may be possible. The brain of children between birth and young adulthood is very plastic and can repair itself much better than the adult brain. The earlier such a treatment could be begun the better.
Early childhood victims of head trauma have shown the ability to recover from brain injury that would be catastrophic and permanent loss of function in adults.
But it is hard to imagine how such a treatment could be developed and tested ethically.
Also because we have little idea how the brain is wired to make us recognize ourselves as male or female where do you begin.
Once they’re adults the disorder is considered normal.
