Secretariat's Preakness Time a Record
The Blood-Horse ^ | June 19, 2012 | Blood-Horse Staff

The Maryland Racing Commission voted Tuesday in a special hearing at Laurel Park that 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, who set records that still stand at the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and the Belmont States (gr. I), also set the record in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) at Pimlico 39 years ago.

In a unanimous 7-0 decision, the official time of the Preakness was changed from 1:54 2/5 to 1:53. Secretariat is one of 11 Triple Crown winners.

I remember the big to-do when the electronic time and the manual stop watch didn’t agree and that’s why the fools didn’t recognize the record. Now, after all of this time, they finally realized that there was no human-error factor in the electronic time.

Did they also vote to define the value of π to be "3"?

The good old days.

Stopped at Pimlico yesterday to make a couple bets. There were about four people there. Didn’t hang around.

Okay, I read the story. Where was 1:53 ever mentioned as a time?

It says the official time was 1:55 and hand timers had it at 1:53 2/5. After review the official time was set at 1:54 2/5

I loved watching Secretariat back in the day but where did 1:53 come from?

Guess I don’t get it.

From another article:

“We had five analysts look at the video, and all five said that it was 1:53 flat,” Lusky said. “We are cautiously optimistic [the new mark will be recognized]. We definitely felt fortunate that everyone was saying the same thing.”
