Question on TV ratings

Posted on 06/21/2012 7:33:03 PM PDT by dewawi

MSNBC's ratings are in the tank. 20% of the country are liberals. If half of liberals polled will LIE and say all they watch is MSNBC when in fact they are watching Oreilly or Hannity because they are far better, what are MSNBC's REAL ratings?

TV ratings aren’t done by polling.

If that info is from a Nielsen’s ratings then it is all lies. Unless it’s changed, Nielsen sends out a schedule and you write down what you watch meaning you can write down whatever you want.

It will appear that MSNBC only registers viewership because people lie and say that they watch it heh.

Whatever.. Survey, poll, call it what you want. The point is what % of liberals asked the question “what do you watch” LIE.

The write-in schedule is for radio ratings.

TV ratings are from the “nielson box”

Each member of the family has a number.

When you turn on the tv you enter your number.

If you watch a program for 5 minutes it gets credit for that half hour.If you switch and watch something else for 25 minutes the first show gets credit for that half hour. It does not work differently for hour plus shows.

That is the official rating. Networks order 15 minute breakdowns from nielson but those are not the ones that are the basis for add buys nor cancellation/renewal.

Your scenario may have happened back when Nielsen viewers wrote down what they watched. Self-reporting is notoriously unreliable.

But the Nielsen boxes in use now measure what you’re watching minute-by-minute. They measure what you’re DVRing, too. Much more accurate than the diaries. (Although Nielsen also still uses diaries, which I think are useless.)

The point is that you have no point.
