I still get swollen cans, I have one right now, a can of Bumble Bee tuna of a batch I purchased in 2004.

Months ago it was a can of Ro-tel tomatoes that swelled on me, I get them occasionally.

“I like the ranch style beans they they picture take a can of them (with Jalapenos) and mix it with a couple cups of cooked rice and you have some good eating.”

Whoever wrote that didn’t include any rice with the beans so he had an incomplete protein. You are right to add the rice to have complete protein.

I have a few jars of peanut butter but it’s regular type and I don’t have many. I should get some Jif natural.

I haven’t stored a nutritional drink like Ensure. I think they have that without sugar also. Then, there is the nutritional drink Glucerna for diabetes with nutrients in it. I’ll have to do some research on Ensure and Glucerna to determine what to get, plus I don’t know their shelf life.

Good old days. C-Rats weren't so great, and after a few weeks MREs aren't either. Last enlistment I was relegated to Services(cook) because of my hearing loss, so feeding troops was/is a big deal to me.

That said, one of the best meals I ever had was at 0300 in a cold October. Cold spaghetti MRE, followed by a nap with a curb for a pillow, up to make coffee at 0430 (make CQ write it down to wake you up). 36 hour days are for young men.

Well, I admit anytime I read one of these deals about the government going door-to-door doing or confiscating anything, my tin-foil warning light goes on hi-beam and blinks like crazy.

The logistics would be a nightmare, they don’t have the personel, there are not enough med centers in the whole country to deal with the resulting casualties.

But it can still be an indicator of the general tone of where governments head is at...

If you garden, try mache also called corn salad. It looks and tastes like fresh spinach but has 4 times the iron and vitamin C. It grows like a weed and doesn’t bolt (go to seed in hot weather as fast as spinach.

I like MREs, myself. Fresh ones (that being a relative term) are pricey, though.

Bury it. Deep.

It is rare. Much more rare than the 60s. You might want to shop somewhere that doesn't mistreat their canned goods.

I read someplace that Tac Bac is produced by Yoders as a novelty item.

Wow. Thanks.

I’m gonna order some seeds and try it.

Today, I just got done harvesting a bunch of New Zealand spinach. Another plant much like spinach - but it doesn’t bolt, it does very well in dryer climates and warmer conditions than any kind of spinach I’ve tried.

Fresh spinach and canned spinach are two different animals. That canned stuff Popeye eats is nasty. The fresh leaves are tasty cooked or added to a green salad. ****** BEWARE of the new tuna cans. I didn't notice a difference until I opened them. They are very thin so I don't know how long they'll last and are easily dented. I opened some cans tonight and couldn't use the lids to squish out the water as they kept bending. I ended up having to put the tuna in a strainer to sit a while before making tuna salad because it was way too liquidy. I suspect we're in for this new thin can for other items as well. Bottom line, be careful when storing these cans long term.

about the door to door scenario.....remember, the govt elites can apply their rules to anyone at anytime...if it suited them to enforce strict gun control, who do you think they would go after first, the inner city feral yutes or the church attending republican in the country?......

I believe you are right, but if you can live with eating bacon without a gun on the can it come in you can get the regular Yoders cheaper.

All of Yoders canned meats are very good.

Anyone remember Celebrity Bacon? We used to buy it for camping trips. It was great!

It depends on what you call rare, evidently not rare enough for me.

As far as bad cans, those were handpicked cans, not dented ones, I am a long time prepper.

I'm also a long time prepper. I haven't had a swollen can since the '70s.

Don’t throw out “expired” canned goods. If the cans are still sealed, they’ll be fine. They’ve found canned foods last far longer than the sell by dates with a little degradation in taste. Rotating is the thing to do but if they are in a cooler dryer place they can last decades.

A big old can of pineapple juice exploded in my pantry last weekend. Took three days to get the sticky goo off everything.

Earlier this year I found one of my large cans of Boyarde Ravioli had started bulging.

A few years back I had a can of tomato paste go bad, which somewhat surprised me because tomato paste/sauce is pretty acidic.
