A dog, confined within his own yard, was shot and killed by an Eldorado, Ill. police officer who had mistakenly arrived to the wrong house to investigate a report of a stolen ladder.
According to Wednesday's publication of WSIL TV, the shooting took place on Sunday evening, when an officer arrived to the home of Jason Robershaw.
Robershaw claims that he heard a knock at his back door, followed by gun shots.
Those shots took the life of his 6-year-old German shepherd, "Smokey."
The grieving owner describes the horrific scene outside of his back door:

What ever happened to an officer coming to the front door.
Anyone sneaking around in my back yard is subject to getting shot.
Say rather, the thinking goes “if one does it, and he is denounced and appropriately disciplined (fired & criminal charges), then the problem is with the officer, not the department. If one does it, and he is not named by his department nor does his department fire and imprison him for his crimes, then the department is to blame.”
When the department does not do so, the implication is that the entire department is littered with those who have repeatedly violated the Constitution, and they wish their crimes to remain hidden.
In cases like this, it is emotionally fairly close to having a cop show up and shoot your 6 year old kid. Just like for your children, the love a good dog is real and runs deep.
They are raised from helpless puppies that fall asleep in your arms. The connection is real and lasts their lifetime and yours. I still find it hard to keep down the lump in my throat when I remember my last boy.

We live in a world where everybody is exceptional. Everybody gets a participation prize. No outstanding people are allowed. Mediocrity is the norm. Grades are inflated so everybody passes whether they can spell, work math problems, or read a map; or not. When these people get out in the world they are not careful or complete in their thinking and actions. Our education system has created a product where “substandard” performance is outstanding. Young people never double-check themselves as they’ve been told everything they do is wonderful.
....and we live in a world where police can get around the Constitutional requirement for a warrant by asking their friendly neighborhood fellow government employee to look up the address for them.
That's why it MUST be stopped and publicly denounced. Otherwise, it's corruption is as corruption does and all trust and goodwill is lost, for all the reasons you cite.

OK, I want to know once and for all. There’s got to be Freepers who are law enforcement or ex-law enforcement. You tell me, what’s the deal with the dog shootings in the last decade or so? Point blank, are officers being taught to kill dogs? Seems like in the last 20 years or so something has really changed.
It’s almost as if there’s an unwritten rule nowadays that says “If dog challenges you, kill it. If a dog barks at you, kill it. If a dog gets in your way, kill it. If you enter someones property and you see a dog you are free to pull out your service weapon and execute it on the spot. Don’t worry, we will cover for you. You have free reign to kill any dog you see. The worst you can expect is a few days of desk duty. We’ve got your back. Go for it.”
Is there some kind of attitude along these lines being conveyed in police departments across the country? At the very least that dog is someone’s property! You can’t just destroy someone’s property without a damn good reason. Or can you? It certainly seems that way.
What was their response?
Those usually aren’t police or firemen. They are professional fund raisers that keep about 95 cents of every dollar you send them.
Just hang up.
I am beginning to believe that many members of local police forces who are ex-military and supposedly ‘shoe-ins’ for a badge and a gun also bring the wrong mind-set to the job. It seems that they all too often forget they are dealing in large part with citizens of the United States and not third-world goat-humpers.
Up until as late as last year you could always count on one or two guys showing up on these kind of threads and defend the cops. I guess it’s gotten indefensible even for them.
If someone shoots a police dog then what happens to them. And Yet when it is the other way around then it was an accident.
Bring the officer up on charges of Murder 1.

I agree. When civil order begins to break down, the cops will be defending their paychecks and power, not the citizens.
The scary thing about this story (and many like it) is that the citizen was minding his own business when gunfire from an out of control cop erupts in the backyard. Now if gunfire erupts in my backyard, I might be tempted to go outside armed. Then, I get shot and the “official story” will be that a crazed civilian came at a cop with a gun. Same thing with wrong address no-knocks at 2am.
I don’t know that I would shoot him, but I would certainly beat him senseless (or worse)... Mainly because I don’t know if I could get to my firearms before he left the yard. One of the pooper-scooper shovels would be very close at hand...
I cried when I read this...the cops are going after dogs all across this country and too fast on the draw.
The article is agonizingly vague. Was this the wrong address of the victim, or the wrong address of the suspected villain? It would be one mindset if you thought you were outside a den of thieves, but quite a different one if you thought you were outside the home of the innocent victim.
Or, the cop’s just a moron.
Disagree with that...I know lots of retired military and they love dogs. My husband, father, son, nephews are all military and nothing would infuraite them more than shooting a dog for such an unjustified reason.
Not that long ago there was a veteran that brought a dog home from Iraq or Afghanistan...it got out and was shot by mistake. Story after story of veterans and their dogs and the love and bond between them.
Many of today’s cops are punks.
