I heard Rush Limbaugh just say something similar to this while he was commenting on Mitt Romney's foreign policy speech and decided that, if cleaned up a bit, it symbolizes the difference between conservatives and liberals.
Conservatives want to restrict and shrink the size and power of government so that freedom can prosper while Liberals want to restrict and shrink the size and power of America so that less freedom prospers around the world.
The day after the 1980 election, Pat Moynihan said something to the effect of, “We lost yesterday because the American people believed, with some justification, that Democrats want government to be strong but America to be weak.”
I remembered that election - 1980. I was in 8th grade and many people were happy that Reagan won. Also to remember, many people were worn down with Jimmy Carter. I remembered one social studies teacher was unhappy about it and I remarked how great it was that Reagan won and I was told point blank to shut up or I would be visiting the principal’s office.
The ironic thing, that teacher married in 1981 and then divorced a few years ago the now commissioner for Indiana High School Athletic Association. At the time, the commissioner was a physical education teacher and what I remember of him, he wasn’t nice. He got on under Indiana’s last Democrat governor.

The thing about Reagan’s election was that the pollsters gave little hint that Reagan was going to win until the last 48 hours so most liberals were shocked - shocked! - that Reagan won. The media had smeared Reagan as some unqualified cowboy dunce itching to start a nuclear war.
Funny, even though the tactic failed, the libs have only become more shrill in demonizing conservatives ever since.
That’s funny, Redneck- I was in 8th grade as well. In my history and English classes, we had a mock election. Reagan got about 75%, Anderson the rest, except that Carter got exactly 2 votes - the 2 teachers!
Kind of funny, we had a mock election as well and Reagan won in a landslide. I kind of forgot about John Anderson, he seemed pretty interesting. The hostage crisis was probably one thing that wore us down and Carter’s inept response. I remembered when Reagan took office and how things started looking up.
Why do idiot liberals trust government so much?
To democrats/liberals government is their God.
Socialism is a religion to these marxist/democrat peices of crap, including to that piece of crap Obama.
Private ownership distributes power among millions of private firms and 100’s of millions of individuals. democrats think it's better to concentrate power on one government , one individual( obama or chavez for example) . As if one individual could simultaneously run millions of businesses better than all these business men put together at the same time. One liberal Obama couldn't run a lemonade stand much less one real business, much less a million businesses at the same time. This Obama couldn't tell a hole in the ground from its ass as was evident in the debate. liberalism is pure lunacy . how's that government working in government schools, government project housing? Can't even teach kids basics in 12 years.
