I have always depended on Hoppes products but lately technology has improved.

What do you use to maintain your weapons?

Ed's red. The recipe is available on the internet. Over the years I have tried many different solvents, Hoppe’s, Breakfree, etc. Ed's red is just as good and is not as expensive.

I have heard of KG11. It is supposed to be very good also, but have not tried it yet.

When I was a small kid, I remember Daddy using Hoppes #9. I also remember Mother once said she liked the smell of Hoppes.

I still use it for most guns. I have a can of GI bore cleaner I use for corrosive primers.

After cleaning, I usually just use some old 30 Weight non detergent motor oil or sometimes mil-tec.

I don’t have any guns. Lost them all in a tragic canoeing accident.

The Mosin breeds rust in the barrel.

I’ve tried Hoppes, soapy vasser, bore cleaner, Windex.. I’m still cleaning the thing for a week until I give up.

I’ve resigned myself to running a couple patches through it prior to firing.

It’s the ammo that does it...

A lot depends on how you use your firearms. If you use your guns every once and a while, and they spend a lot of time in storage, I recommend Hoppe's. It doesn't really "dry", leaving a protective coating against rust. I carry for work (federal LE) and my guns haven't ever been shot in anger, but they get carried every day. For that reason I use Hoppe's.

You will probably get a bit better first shot accuracy for hunting with a solvent that dries up like Shooter's Choice. If you want to go high tech then Tetra Gun has a bunch of oils, greases and solvents that have some bonding polymer lubricants.

If you are worried about first shot accuracy (long range hunting) the I recommend the following video from the USAMU.

Hoppes #9. I’ll never change from it regardless of how much solvent technology “improves”. It just works!

For all except muzzleloaders, it’s Hoppe’s for the bore and Breakfree CLP. Caution: When using any copper solvents like Hoppe’s on a chromed bore, be sure to get ALL the solvent out. Most chromed barrels have a copper layer under the chrome (part of the chroming process). Any imperfection in the chrome will let the solvent get at the copper if given enough time. It’ll ruin a bore and your day.

For muzzleloaders, I use a homemade mix of equal parts isopropyl alcohol and blue juice (windshield washer fluid). Cuts the crud better and dries a whole lot faster than water-based solvents (or spit, but sometimes that’s all that’s available…)

Not at all Shady - Special Pig Fat(13%) Gun Oil for use Against Muslims Shooting Americans!

Rated Best Weapons Lube on the Planet for Automatic Weapons. Guaranteed to improve function and reliability.

Click here for a little more information.

SILVER BULLET GUN OIL, is a HIGHLY EFFECTIVE Counter-Islamic terrorist force multiplier. SILVER BULLET GUN OIL was designed specifically to put Demoralizing FEAR and TERROR into SUPPOSEDLY "Fearless" Islamo-Fascist terrorists. It was created with the "TRUE BELIEVER'' in mind. According to the Koran, Allah states, "Any of my followers contaminated by swine at the time of his death will be denied entry to my paradise forever, I HATE THE STENCH OF SWINE."

HOW does SILVER BULLET GUN OIL work? SILVER BULLET GUN OIL CONTAINS 13% USDA LIQUEFIED PIG FAT. The PIG FAT is mixed with our blended, hi-grade WEAPONS OIL designed for use in ALL FIREARMS. The oil is applied to the inside of the barrel of any firearm or weapons system. When fired, BULLETS are coated with SILVER BULLET GUN OIL containing the PIG FAT. The PIG FAT is transferred to anything the BULLETS STRIKE. The coating of OIL CONTAINING PIG FAT effectively DENIES entry to Allah's Paradise to any Islamo-Fascist terrorist KIA with a bullet coming from a firearm using SILVER BULLET GUN OIL in the barrel. SILVER BULLET GUN OIL uses the belief system of Allah's Islamo-Fascist terrorists to put fear of death into them, a fear they haven't had until NOW.

SILVER BULLET GUN OIL can be used in or on ALL weapons and weapons systems. Put a drop on the remains of ''suicide bombers'' for the same effect-No Paradise! FOR MAXIMUM IMPACT DOWNRANGE; USE ''SILVER BULLET'' AND MAKE SURE THE ISLAMO-FASCIST COWARDS KNOW IT!

SILVER BULLET IS A TRUE ''FORCE-MULTIPLIER''. Thousands of bottles of Silver Bullet Gun Oil have been distributed since July of 2004 by its creator to members of ALL U.S. Military branches. This includes members of US Marine Infantry, Marine Recon, US Marine Scout Sniper (SS) units, Navy Seals, regular Army members, Army Rangers, Green Berets, Reserve units and National Guard units deployed or being deployed to the Middle East Theatre of Operations. Several M1 Abrams tank platoons use '' Silver Bullet Gun Oil'' in their weapons systems. A number of Apache and Cobra ''Choppers'' use Silver Bullet in their "Chain Guns''. Many of Allah's ''HOLY WARRIORS'' have been greatly disappointed upon arriving at the entrance to Allah's ''VIRGINWORLD''. SILVER BULLET GUN OIL has also been distributed to members of police tactical teams throughout the USA from coast to coast. A number of ''Air Marshals'' also use SILVER BULLET GUN OIL in their in-flight weaponry.

THIS PRODUCT IS FOR USE ON ARMED MUSLIM TERRORISTS ONLY. WE DO NOT PROMOTE DISCRIMINATION AGAINST ANY RACE OR RELIGION, ONLY TERRORISTS.

Death to International Islamic Terrorism.

Just the smell of Hoppe’s takes me back to deer camp 50 years ago - with Dad and my brother cleaning our rifles, cooking up some fresh backstrap for supper. It’s a fine solvent, along with Outer’s gun oil and a fresh silicone impregnated cloth for a final wipe down.

I use Ballistol, the usual rods, bore brushes, old toothbrushes, cleaning patches. I tried a ‘boresnake’, but it broke, while in the barrel.

There is a YouTube video by Hickok45 titled, “Cleaning Revolvers”, but he goes into the Ballistol product, too.

My ‘local armorer’ was the one who turned me onto the stuff.

Hoppes 9 for general purpose, and nostalgia. For gas operated guns where carbon buildup is a problem, M-Pro7 works great.
