Tired of "folks"
vanity post

Posted on 10/16/2012 9:59:45 PM PDT by YankeeinOkieville

So after watching tonight's debate, my overwhelming take-away is when did it become appropriate and common for a person seeking political office to refer to people as "folks"? It was like the proverbial nails-on-a-chalkboard to me every time I heard Mr. Obama hiss the word and before the first hour was up, I actually yelled at the screen.

This was the first time in a very long time I had any sort of "out loud" reaction to something on television and I almost turned it off!

Then I reminded myself that since I don't normally watch any TV (I was streaming C-SPAN through the computer) and since I had turned it on specifically to watch the debate, I steeled myself to get through it. (I can see why some of y'all turn these things into drinking games ;-)~ )

Soon I started noticing Mr. Romney with the same affectation.

So I ask you, my fellow Freepers, is it really common and I just never noticed it before Obama or has he lowered this standard as well as those of decorum, civility, and respect for where your feet belong?

Funniest Obama performance was the faux southern down home black folk speech that was leaked a couple weeks ago.

Folks = I’m a regular person like you. Not a Harvard educated elitist.

GWB’s very first statement on 9/11/01 referred to the filthy, dirty ‘effin terrorists as “folks”.

You live in Folkieville and don’t get it?

Like waving at everyone in down as you pass them in your truck and a friend from out of town remarks “Gee, seems like you know everyone in town”.

“Nope”.

All other considerations be damned.. the more 'lk' words the better.

Don't sulk. Polk for pres! Make yolk, not caulk! Folks walk the talk, thanks to Salk but don't stalk.

"Dudette, actually"

Shouldn't you be a Yankeette (or somesuch)?

I've found that when challenged for a "handle" by "public servants" that using "Citizen" doesn't carry much weight. Disappointing is has been.

Your name would indicate why you might object to “folks”. It’s a black/southern thing y’all.

Really? Amazing. I guess I was in such shock over the events it didn't register. So it is a common nomenclature in politics? Like every single time certain politicians speak of us common rabble, we are "folks"?

The term “folks” is used in the Midwest and South.

But the foreign term the Marxists recently introduced is changing the “the public” to Marx’s language “the masses.” That really irks me. Americans are referred to as the public or citizens. The masses were in the Soviet Union.

Too bad yankees keep reading their compass upside down or something like that. Once they get down here ‘bout all they do is complain about us and can’t seem to remember which way is up to find their way back north. I really wish more would though.
