Watch out for Ford/Mercury torque converter problems. (My 2003 Sable, w/duratec 24 valve dohc v6 engine, torque converter failed = costs $1400 for repair, and “zero” help from FMC!!)

Nothing made by Dodge or Chrysler, they may look nice but as a mechanic for 40 years I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly. I have heard the Hyundai does indeed turns out to be very reliable.
American made? yeah right, lots of parts and components made elsewhere.
Jaguar made a little splash a few years ago when Ford pressure resulted in them being put together better from the factory according to ONE JD Power study. That doesn’t mean anyone familiar calls the brand reliable over a year’s use, and they’ve sunk again to near Rover range with JD Power.
Jaguars are still at the bottom in True Delta and Consumer Reports.
People buy them because they’re sex on wheels, not because they’re dependable daily drivers. BTW, my wife does work for a Jaguar dealer.

I love the looks of the new Focus hatch. They need to make a performance AWD SVT version.
Additionally, the new Jaguars are butt-ass ugly. Literally - they look like chromed suppositories. We have a gorgeous 99 XJ8, and I drive a 97 XJ6, my third XJ6 and possibly my last Jaguar. They’re just too ugly, and my friend the Jag mechanic agrees that the new ones (X type etc) are P’s of S. (Not that I’d buy one) Frankly, I hate computers and gadgets all over cars. Best car in the world (all over the world) for reliability is a Mercedes 240d, manual.
One of the nice things about Lexington is that due to the Toyota influence in the area, you can get really good sushi there. My son just finished school at UK in December, and had a really great hole in the wall place run by an older Japanese guy. We’d always go when we were up visiting.

As has already been noted, the Subie version is RWD like the Toyota.
I just watched last night the UK Top Gear episode from this season (2/10/13) where they drove the Toyota version, which they call by another name across the pond (GT86).
At the end of the segment, Jeremy Clarkson asked the rhetorical question “How do you decide which to buy, the Toyota or the Subaru?” He then proceeded to eenie-meenie-minie-moe the decision.
They’re the same car, dealership and deal should make the decision for you, if both are available to you locally.
The Pinzgauer is Austrian, not Swiss. Or was, before they were bought by BAE and became British, and then discontinued.
We were trying to get together a mass group buy of them by a bunch of guys on an FAL forum in the late 90s. I dropped out, not sure if they went through with it or not. Several people were very interested in the commo version, which basically had a box on the load bed. They were going to use them for hunting camping.

The worse review of the FRS/BRZ/GT86 I have seen is Ignition episode 14. If a company paid for a review they probably wouldn't get as good a review as that. This car will probably be another classic like its predecessor, the corolla GTS AE86.

The GT86 is the name of Toyota's version outside the US. Scion got the car in the US to build out its line better. There are a couple of differences with the BRZ and FRS, upgraded dash electronics and a stiffer suspension (and a much higher price).

We only have 4K miles on it thus far, I Love IT! The ONLY thing that I really kinda don’t like is the PAX/Front Side Seat is kinda not real comfortable. The “Boxer” Engine is REAL neat.
Love my Honda Civic but don’t know how it compares to the Toyota Corolla. Do know firsthand how it compares to a Camry. The Camry has a smoother ride and less road noise. The Civic is better on gas mileage.
How is that one for a daily ride! Gas mileage? 0.5 miles to the gallon? Tires? 200 miles and they are done? Brakes? They last about a day.
I’m a Sube fan, have a 2007 2.5 GT Limited turbo Legacy wagon, would love to have a BRZ coupe but finances do not permit. They’re “hot” right now too, and I refuse to pay full price let alone AMV, so if I get one it’ll be down the road, maybe even used.
The normally aspirated Forester with five speed auto is good for around 28 mpg highway, they may have put the CVT (continuously variable transmission) into it by now, which should boost mpg into low thirties, it did in the 2.5 Outback at least. I like shifting gears, even if my knees don’t allow a clutch anymore, but I’ve rented cars with CVT and you don’t really notice it after the first day. It just spools up and goes, no gears to shift.
A Forester is a fine, practical, reliable vehicle with good reliability and resale. It’s the best small AWD car-based SUV imho. Most vehicle reliability and resale value sites bear that opinion out.
