‘Rand felt the need to say the same thing 24,438 times through each of her Adonis-like characters.’

I AGREE WITH YOU 100% se she did sort of over do things with the incessant examples of the weaknesses and evils of socialism...but i forgive her that ...read ‘FOR THE NEW INTELLECTUALS’ it does capture Obejectivism in it’s essence...and it doesn’t beat you up with repetivness...

I share your disdain for “novels.”
I like non-fiction. My mind can only absorb a limited amount...LOL. Don’t confuse me with non factual crap.

A film director once told me: “Want to sell fiction, make documentary films, want to tell the truth, make drama films.”

I think the same applies to literature. Who reads Ann Coulter’s (or whoever your pundit god is) 5 year old books? Heck, two year old!

Just from reading Atlas Shrugged, you could tell Ayn was probably a huge b*tch if you knew her.

I hated the modern authors that I was given to read in high school. It was all self-pity and navel-gazing. I associated reading with pain, and vowed never to read another book after graduating...

My homeschooled children were able to read stories of heroic saints. Man, I would have appreciated just one.

My attitude was like yours. "If these authors have something great to say, just come out and say it." I guess that's why I like St. Thomas. He's a bottom line kind of guy.

But I've learned that people learn in different ways. My girls much prefer learning through literature. My daughter learned most of her history through tangential references in the books that she's read.

And I have found worthwhile literature on my own. My favorite is, The Brothers Karamazov. It will spoil you for anything else, though.

Wolfe was incredibly influential after WWII. Writers like Styron and Kerouac and James Jones swore by him. Nowadays it’s hard to see what they found in him. Maybe it was just the experience of being young and lonely with great expectations of the future ahead and feeling poetic about life. Anyway, I found it very hard to get half-way through his first book (LHA). The man did take his time getting to the point (if there was one).
