Cumberbatch plays Sherlock Holmes in the British modern TV series, which can be had on Netflix. Much better than the American imitation.

I enjoyed the new ST movie for the simple reason that it blew away the whole fanboy culture that was restricting and stifling the franchise. How could anything exciting or original come out of that ST universe when it was so constrained by rules that were enforced by pimply-faced, overweight eunuchs who live in their mother’s basements?

Abrams breathed a new life into the franchise and allowed what was old to be new again. Now we can see the original and beloved characters in completely new adventures with unlimited possibilities.

I look forward to seeing this film in IMAX and the fanboys can go find a corner of the next ST convention to argue about it.

My only complaint about the re-boot is that Scotty created a transport technology that, for all practical intents and purposes, rendered starships all but obsolete. Similar to the Batman movies where in the first one he had the ability to summon bats with a device then completely forgot about it for the rest of the trilogy.

Upgrading Uhura was OK, except that in doing so, they pushed some of the other characters into the background. Dr. McCoy is, or at least was, a pivotal character. He should not be shoved into the background.

Hopefully, he'll get a more important role this time around. I understand that he's featured in the 9-minute cold open.

I agree. And another poster mentioned other plot inconsistencies. Because I like ST, I’m able to disregard most of them. Think of Nemesis when the two crashed ships separated by one of them firing reverse thrusters. Really? What held the Enterprise in place?

Heck, even the transporter was a plot device to get around not having a model of a shuttle.

If you demand plot consistency, ST is not for you. From the shows, to the movies, holes everywhere. I thought the best was the tv show, “Enterprise”, but the young nerdy crowd rejected it, until it was too late.

In enjoyed JJ’s reboot I just hope that every movie is not Kirk vs Super Villain.

I understand writing a movie is different that writing an episode or a season for a tv show I just hope they come up with story lines involving exploration where no man has gone before, political story lines involving the Klingons, or intra Federation politics or something other than Kirk vs Super Villain.

Do you honestly think William Shatner’s Kirk could command an aircraft carrier or space ship in real life? you know that stuff about “wait just a minute” while he cleverly lowers the other ship’s shields, doesn’t work in real life.

My gripe with the Abrahms version of ST is that it is all FX, 2-dimensional characters, and stupidity after plot stupidity. Just bad writing. IOW, ST movies have been reduced to just big video games.

Agreed. The reboot had more than a few groan-worthy moments, in terms of plot holes, ridiculous coincidences (oh, look, there's old Spock! Oh look, there's Scotty!) and bad physics. The original series at least made some attempt to provoke thought. This movie was just another high-action, glitz-fest made for dumbed-down kids.

Still better than the Star Wars prequels, but that's not saying much.

Okay, I just got thru watching this new trailer over at AICN, and I am psyched to see this movie.

Kirk was, by that time, someone who had EARNED his way up in the ranks. Like most naval officers, he actually knew a lot about his ship’s engineering. What a concept - a military guy who had military experience, instead of a kid in space.

Meanwhile...the Kryptonian 'countdown' rolls on toward an 8:15 EST deadline this evening. Then what? People believe a new 'Man of Steel' trailer will make its debut. An off-beat 'Message from General Zod' has already hit the net.

Trek, Superman, Iron Man, Thor, Wolverine...geek treats this year, for sure.

it’s a movie, and he wasn’t a kid. Close but not really. My point about Kirk prime is his behavior was not realistic, and then there was the over acting. Don’t get me wrong I loved the show.
