If thats the case, why did the Jets even acquire him in the first place?

That is the $50,000 question; why did the Jets sign him? I think it's been established that Elway didn't like Tebow. When Denver traded him to the Jets there were some stories - I don't know how accurate - that Jacksonville offered a little better deal for him, but Elway sent him to New York anyway. At the time Sanchez had just signed a big contract and certainly hadn't had the disaster of a year he just had, so the Jets weren't looking for a new starter in that position. So why the heck did they take him unless it was Elway's plan to get Tebow out of football sooner than his average QB skills would have done on their own?

So Elway hated Tim Tebow so bad, the guy who had just resurrected his season and gave him a playoff win and the money that comes with it, that he sabotaged his career by sending him to New York. Oh boy.

No, Elway knew that Tebow didn’t have the skills to be a long term NFL starter. So he traded him and acquired one of the best QBs ever as his replacement.
