The world of heavy metal has lost one of its pioneering guitarists.

Jeff Hanneman, one of the cofounders of Slayer, died today, the band announced on its website. He was 49.

"Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11 am this morning near his Southern California home," the statement reads. "Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed."

Sorry to hear that. I saw Slayer only once, at L’Amour’s in Brooklyn during the RIB tour. Quite loud; I was wondering how the roof stayed on the place.

I heard nothing about the spider bite, myself. Apparently the venom is not what caused his illness; he contracted necrotizing fasciitis (sounds almost like a Slayer song title) with some manner of flesh-eating bacteria as the cause.

They’re all male, but they don’t take their clothes off. Definitely not glam metal.

Another article said the spider bite brought on flesh eating disease.

Man, I am so bummed about this. The last time was when Ronnie James Dio died on May 10, 2010, and before that when Dimebag Darrel was murdered. I’m going to the river tonight to drink beers and listen to Slayer. Just f**k.

Yeah, I always thought that metalheads are mostly conservative and bring that up often with friends and band member I know. There are many libs too, but in general I think metalheads are more than 55% conservative. I know most of my friends are. Another hardcore conservative icon of metal is Deicide’s Ralph Santolla. He’s never afraid to share a well deserved FUBO with his friends.

uh, Metallica got their collective panties in a wad because their music was used in Gitmo interrogations. I guess Lars wanted to get paid for that too. FUM, long live Dave Mustaine!

Mustaine and Arraya are a lot more my style than Metallica, but the Big 4 is the Big 4

This news really shocked me. Reign In Blood and South Of Heaven are two of my favorite metal albums. I'll have to break them out this weekend and have a Slayer mini-marathon as a tribute. R.I.P. Jeff, and thanks for all the great music.

Metallica's lib, at least Lars and Hammett. Hetfield is anti-political anything - which is probably the majority of metal.

“uh, Metallica got their collective panties in a wad because their music was used in Gitmo interrogations. I guess Lars wanted to get paid for that too.”

According to the official Metallica website:

Clearing the Air
February 18, 2013

There has been a lot of talk recently about us asking the military not to use our music to “soften people up before interrogation”. We NEVER commented to the military either way on this matter. Any statements that have been made otherwise are not correct.
