The teenage daughter of a woman who secretly left her family 11 years ago says she's angry and doesn't want to have a relationship with her.
Morgan Heist said Thursday that she's still trying to sort out why Brenda Heist would have decided to abandon her and her brother in Pennsylvania in 2002 and hitchhike with strangers to Florida.
Morgan Heist is now a 19-year-old freshman at a community college outside Philadelphia. She says she thinks about how she's spent the last decade mourning a woman who was alive.
Heist’s ex-husband meanwhile has said he is angry but working on forgiveness. He was once considered a suspect in her disappearance.
'There were families who would not let our children play with theirs because of me,' says Lee Heist Senior.
Brenda Heist was reported missing by her husband on February 8, 2002. The then 42-year-old was last been seen that morning dropping off her two children at school in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Her car was found a few days later with no apparent sign of a struggle.
Then on Friday evening she walked into Monroe County Sheriff’s Office in Key Largo, Florida and announced who she was.
After arriving in the Sunshine State, she had lived as a homeless person in the Key West area, sleeping under bridges and tents and eating food thrown out by fast food restaurants, police said.
In all the years she was missing she never used a bank card or ID, even when she made some money cleaning boats.

I am not sure that there is a drug problem.
This woman had something physically wrong with her when she disappeared.
No eyebrows or eyelashes.
No telling what all ails her.
Ive seen some pretty effed up stuff from people over the years, including abandonment.
Looks like a crack-head or meth-head now.
She was an accountant, too. Whatever caused her to leave must have been pretty traumatic.

She looked pretty thin and younger when she disappeared.
Wasn’t there a king or important person in the Old Testament who wandered around in the desert for a few years, mid-life, and then came back?
I’m with the daughter, too. What a terrible, selfish thing to do to her family. She never once called. Another thread mentioned meth and alcoholism.
Sounds like my HS English teacher. Busted for fraud and theft after ‘caring’ for the checks of several elderly neighbors.
We had some hot shot high level fellow at work just disappear like this about 2 years ago.

They found his car abandoned, and he was gone.
Turns out he was doinking some gal half his age and they split.

Something snapped; mother’s typically are not wired to walk away from their children.
The daughter’s reaction may be understandable, but that is her mother and with a bit more maturity she may realize how important it is for her to know her mother and even to find the courage to forgive her.
And the clock is working against such a possibility.
Yes I do. The one on the left looks halfway normal. The current picture on the right looks like she’s crazy...and probably is. But, the currently picture of the woman resembles a lot of the people who voted for Obama.
Meth likely but malnutrition will quickly end the teeth too. And with her dumpster diving, that’s likely.
