Keep that Bible out of my room
The Times of Israel ^ | 5/21/2013 | KATE BRUMBACK and RUSS BYNUM

An atheist, Buckner believes that no religious literature should be provided in government-owned lodging, and he presented that concern to management at the Amicalola Falls State Park.

Officials told Buckner they would remove the Bibles from all state park resorts while the state attorney general looked into the matter. Not long afterward, however, the AG issued a ruling saying the state was on firm legal ground because it hadn’t paid for the books. On Wednesday, Gov. Nathan Deal ordered the Bibles returned.

Deal argued that if the state didn’t pay for them, it can’t be seen as endorsing them. He also noted that any religious group can donate literature. But his action sparked a string of comments on social media and captured the attention of local news television stations. It also prompted some to question why this hasn’t been more of an issue in the US before.

Buckner is pondering his next move. One idea he is considering is to test the state’s offer to accept literature from other religions in state-owned lodging. He also said he would be willing to participate if an organization with similar beliefs decides to launch a lawsuit over the issue.

‘When you go into a state park cabin and the only piece of religious literature there is a Protestant Bible, that suggests the government’s endorsed that particular perspective’

Good article, and the comments are very interesting. I agree with the lady who says that the atheists fear of God is proof of His existence. Most rational adults are not afraid of Santa Claus or Micky Mouse, but atheists react to the very name of God as if they were being set on fire!

How come he can push his religion on others?

This is the sort of anti-Protestant bigot who’d be killing babies if he could get away with it.

I suppose they could just keep the Bibles (and any other religious material) at the front desk and hand them out there, but something tells me that Buckner and his kind wouldn’t be too happy with that solution.

Since atheists deny that is a religious faith, it cannot be counted as a religion (by his own definition). And the texts he selected against specific faiths are not "from other religions". They are strictly against specific faiths. It isn't about "debate" or "political education". It is about providing religious texts for those who may want to read them for personal uplift.

it just proves this isn’t about freedom from religion. he wants to find other groups to donate books to “test” the policy. gee when he couldn’t get the evil bible books removed, now he wants to get as many religious books in there as he can.

he’s just an elitist atheist hypocrite with a chip on his shoulder for Christianity. no other religions spend a serious amount of time and money to place their books anywhere.

Odd. Speaking for myself and every other atheist I know, we don’t fear something that we have never seen evidence for. Your assertion is simply untrue.

This Buckner guy should raise money to put Korans in every hotel room and perhaps some stupid Dianetics. Such a simple “solution” to such a stupid problem.

And am I the only one who sees more Moron, er, Mormon bibles than Protestant Bibles in hotel rooms?

No, it suggests that other religions are too cheap to give out free copies of their book of choice.

They are not being prevented from doing it, they just don't. And that is their choice.

What is the matter with this guy that he doesn't support choice?

Keep that Godless athiest out of the state of GA.

It's "atheist" and calling them "Godless" is a bit of redundant, don't you think? By the way, billions of humans would call you "Godless" too, simply because you didn't grow up where they grew up to accept a different Bronze Age myth.

A book of words may be ignored. The Word will not. One way or another The Word will prove true, and every man a liar. Meanwhile I note with interest the fear and loathing that attends to some who come into contact with a Holy Bible. Why is that?

I think that's a wonderful idea and would have no problem with it at all. I'd also be curious as to the usage stats of each text.

“prompted some to question why this hasn’t been more of an issue in the US before.”

Why would anyone ask this? The answer is simple. People were 100 times less pathetic 50 years ago.

A TV or radio in his room poses as much danger to him to receive a Christian message as an unopened Bible. I would assume those might be in government owned lodging and were probably paid for by the government. He should go after their removal too if he wants to remain consistent.

This guy is just another book burner. Perhaps he’d prefer North Korea. No religious texts in their hotels.

The Christian Bible is the most popular book of all time, so if there is one book that a state which is completely neutral in regards to religion or non-religion with no agenda for or against should decide to allow in a lodge, why not go with the hands-down most popular ever? What this Atheist is asking for is to have religious books banned from consideration because he wants the state to favor non-religion over religion.
