Seven people have been admitted to area hospitals, and two of them have died, in what health officials described Tuesday as a “cluster” of respiratory illnesses with flulike symptoms.

Peggy Blakeney, the area administrator for the state Department of Public Health, said officials with the state Department of Public Health in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control are investigating a “cluster” of respiratory illnesses across southeast Alabama.

Blakeney said so far, through their ongoing investigation, they know of seven people hospitalized for treatment. She said two of those people have died.

Corey Kirkland, the assistant administrator for the area, said those two deaths occurred on Saturday and Sunday.

Peggy Williams, a state Department of Health investigator, said of the five people who remained hospitalized Tuesday, one was in an intensive care unit at a local hospital.

Another Dangerous Coronavirus: MERS
http://www.earthfiles.com/news.php?ID=2088&category=Environment

Alabama’s Dept. of Public Health reports “respiratory illness of unknown origin” that has infected 7 people in southeast Alabama and killed 2. Does not appear to be avian influenza, but MERS is a question while CDC test results pending.
“Of most concern is the fact that the different clusters
of MERS seen in multiple countries increasingly supports the hypothesis
that when there is close human contact, this MERS coronavirus
can transmit from person to person.”
- Keiji Fukuda, Asst. Dir.-General, W.H.O.

There’s another article on the sidebar of that page stating that tests have shown the outbreak to be a late outbreak of flu and bacterial pneumonia and such things.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Southeast Alabama, arguably in the US (although they talk funny there)...

They have a disease down there called crimson tide, IIRC.

It sure makes a lot of people sick.

Who knows? There might be a nearby pig farm with workers from American Samoa, or a Perdue chicken-packing plant full of illegals from who knows where.

Please add me to the Bring Out Your Dead pinglist? I want to know for 100% certainty when I’m not going to have to bring out my dead....

How old are the people? Is this a nursing home issue, or are these normally healthy folk?

It’s the only way to get on a ping list these days, isn’t it?

Of all my ping lists:
3-D printer
Bring Out Your Dead (AKA Ebola)
Constitutional Eligibility (AKA Birther)
Harry Potter
Nut-Job Conspiracy Theory (AKA Breitbart)
Red Dwarf
Only the N-JCT list requires that you threaten to report me to the Mod Squad to get on, and that's only because of how indignant stuck_in_new_orleans got when I pinged her.

“Williamson also said the ages of the 10 patients admitted to a local hospital included people as young as 24 on up to 87. He said two of those people have since gone home.

Williamson said the two people who died were ages 34 and 55.”

Well, I certainly remember having to threaten to report you to the Mods to get on the Nut-Job Conspiracy list. They’ve been good articles, therefore a rich ping list. The Red Dwarf ones are good, too.

I expect nothing less from the Bring Out Your Dead list, Nully. :^)
