....Addendum...I should add that the book points out why the old bombs were important. Iron bombs are designed so that it takes about 45 minutes in a fire before they will explode and the fire crews know this so if they cannot put the fire out they withdraw before hand. But these old bombs were unstable and went off in 10 minutes killing all the fire crews and dastroying their equipment. Thats why this fire was so bad and so many men were lost.
If you believe the official report. The one that McCain's father would most certainly have played a part in as head of The Navy.
Which was a more common occurrence, a procedure that was given a name to describe it, (i.e., wet starting) or a missile firing itself?
After the fire the Forrestal was headed for the yards for repair. McCain transferred to a squadron on the Oriskany which was headed for Vietnam. Had he remained with his original squadron in the states he would not have been shot down and captured 3 months later. Are you criticizing him for that?
I don’t see it as inappropriate.
He was born with two silver spoons in his mouth.
“His record as a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy was dismal. He piled up demerits left and right for breaking the rules, and barely passed his schoolwork, graduating 894th in a class of 899.
He bare passed flight school and ended up crashing two planes and damaging a third.”

The guy is a walking disaster. He never should have run for Prez.
Anyway, to my Dad's left was a Marine Lieutenant and to his right was McCain. The Admiral was walking through the line, and he blessed out the Lt. to Dad's left for having a string loose or something. In his periphery, Dad noticed that McCain's dress whites were off-color between the tops and bottoms, and that McCain had a 5 o'clock shadow.
After the Admiral passed my dad, he went up to McCain. Dad though he'd get a chewing out. Instead, the Admiral stuck out his hand and said, "Hey, John, how's your dad doing?"
McCain was a nice enough guy, but he was a perfumed prince whose had his skids greased his whole life. His most notable accomplishment was getting the crap beaten out of him by Democrats for five years in Hanoi...and as we found out in 2008, he enjoyed having it done to him again.
Quite a home-page Rim ... thanx.
I do. This thread was about a memorial for the 134 sailors that perished that day while honoring the courage of those who saved the ship. My slamming McNut had nothing to do with the purpose of this thread.
As I've repeatedly pointed out, my comments about McCain are rooted in his own words as well as those of his shipmates.
Now I can add this personal reflection to the list.
I'm sure I'm not done being flamed but I can handle it.
I won't deny I wet-started this conversation (heh, heh), but unlike SOME people, I won't hide behind my daddy's uniform to get out of it.
Bring it on, McCain lovers! Help your boy bring destroy this country.
Such a lovely tribute posted by o7jimmy.
Thanks so much.
The families deserve that truth.
And in McCain's own words, he was a reckless pilot.
The time he served as a POW is another matter.
"We see severely injured young men in the steering control, cut off by the spreading inferno and with no hope of rescue, slowly dying, but stoically executing orders until they expired. ("They never begged for mercy. They never whined. They never whimpered. They were sailors to the end.") We see a young man -- his body charred beyond recognition -- lying in silence and patiently waiting to die, whose last thought is for the palpable saddness of his caregiver: "That's okay, you don't have to feel bad. I haven't done anything I'm ashamed of. I'm ready to go.' These ordinary, $150-a-month shiphands were the very definition of selflessness."......
We all know the truth.
This was NOT the time or place for MY reply.
You do as you see fit, but I regret having made THAT reply on THIS thread on THIS day.
If you don’t want it removed, contact the Mods yourself. Since it’s still up there, they prolly agree with you.
The father of my college roommate was a “corpseman” on the Forrestal. When my friend got older, he asked his dad about that day. His dad was describing the injuries and death and fire and smells and started crying for a long time.
Duly noted. I have no quarrel with you.
OK
Who are these "they" that you attribute that tinfoil nonsense to?
I understand the incident was investigated by the Navy and McCain was absolved of all charges but he was still transferred to another ship afterwards.
As were a number of pilots and enlisted men serving in CVAG-17 because the Forrestal was out of commission for 207 days being repaired. McCain was transferred to VA-163 embarked on the Oriskany arriving on 30 September 1967 and shortly thereafter got himself shot down on 26 October 1967.
I do know that McCain's father was some Navy hotshot at the time.
CINCUSNAVEUR. You would have thought that the "hotshot" could have pulled some strings to keep his son out of harms way.
Indeed, McCain rigged that F-4B across the deck to fire a Zuni rocket into Fred White’s A-4E, destroy 21 aircraft, injure 161, kill 134, cause the Forrestal to be out of commission for 207 days and cost the Navy $72 million. If he was devious enough to do all of that you’d think he could have figured out how to defeat Soetoro.
