Who are these "they" that you attribute that tinfoil nonsense to?

His shipmates. Whose account I choose not to denigrate by referring to as "tinfoil nonsense." You should be ashamed of yourself. On this of all days.

CINCUSNAVEUR. You would have thought that the "hotshot" could have pulled some strings to keep his son out of harms way.

Or the brig for that matter.

They say McCain "wet started" his jet....AA you're right...A multi million dollar plane is not like a car. The pilot has very detailed instructions on starting the engines, first not to cause damage and second not to do something that will make it stop flying later. Also the pilot is under strict control while on the flight deck . He does nothing but exactly what he's told to do as to keep from hurting someone who is working nearby...

His shipmates.

Who are unnamed. A genius like you should be able to produce the names behind the accusations.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

The shame here is in you and the other card carrying members of the low information FR cabal perpetuating nonsense. You lack the sense to realize how much of a fool you are.

How much time have you spent serving on the flightdeck on a carrier or in any tactical NAVAIR capacity whatsoever?

I'm sure his shipmates have names.

I've never served on an aircraft carrier. Never claimed to . What does that have to do with anything anyway?

As for being a card carrying member of the low information FR cabal, did you make up that "low information" thing? That's pretty clever. I'll bet some people might think you stole that from Rush Limbaugh. But that would be tinfoil nonsense, wouldn't it?

If you want to sheepishly believe what your government reports to you, far be it from me to stop you.

The stories of McCain's role in the Forrestal fire have been around a lot longer than FR. Who do you suppose originated them?

If anybody is responsible for their longevity, it's McCain himself who admits to nights of wanton drunkenness only to ditch planes into Corpus Christi Bay the next day along with personal accounts of others whose names I don't have who witnessed preferential treatment of a high ranking officer's son.

I'm sure his shipmates have names.

What are they? If you're going to engage in libel at least have the onions to back it up. That would take some effort on your part which we both know you're incapable of expending.

I've never served on an aircraft carrier.

Obviously.

What does that have to do with anything anyway?

Because your lack of experience exposes your ignorance and that's why you see no problem whatsoever in perpetuating a myth.

I'll bet some people might think you stole that from Rush Limbaugh.

Those people would be more of your fellow comrades in the low information cabal since Limbaugh didn't coin the phrase. Just as he didn't coin the "Magic Negro" line in describing Soetoro.

If you want to sheepishly believe what your government reports to you, far be it from me to stop you.

I have actual experience in tactical NAVAIR operations. I can quite easily sift through the urban legend BS perpetuated by fools like you both in and out of government. I've read hundreds of reports generated by accident investigation boards. I know full well of the mistakes that deck handlers made and continue to make. I also know how lax procedures were on flightdecks underway in the Tonkin Gulf during the Viet Nam war. I suppose you think McCain is also responsible for the fires on the Oriskany and the Enterprise, the latter of which also involved a Zuni rocket. Hell, why don't you blame him for the fire on the George Washington in 2008 while you're at it.

The stories of McCain's role in the Forrestal fire have been around a lot longer than FR. Who do you suppose originated them?

Urban legends have a lot of fathers for a variety of reasons. Do I find it plausible that people in the Navy who didn't care for McCain hatched the story that he was responsible for the accident on the Forrestal? Indeed I do. Does that mean he was responsible for what happened? No it doesn't.

If anybody is responsible for their longevity, it's McCain himself

Show us where McCain has ever admitted to causing the disaster on the Forrestal.

who admits to nights of wanton drunkenness only to ditch planes into Corpus Christi Bay the next day along with personal accounts of others whose names I don't have who witnessed preferential treatment of a high ranking officer's son.

You're comparing apples to oranges. One can easily make the argument that the skids were greased for McCain and that he never should have been commissioned let alone received his wings as a Naval aviator. That however, doesn't mean that he is responsible for what happened on the Forrestal.

A fairly comprehensive investigation showed that it was the process of removing the safety pins that kept any kind of current from getting to the MER/SER rack with the ordinance on it (in this case, Zuni rockets on a Phantom diagonally across the flight deck from McCain's VA-46 Skyhawk) to save time was the cause.

Apparently, it slowed down the workflow enough to find a time and place to remove the pins in accordance with the approved procedures that it really did slow down the pace of the launch.

They got an approved workaround to pull the safety pins out before they started the engines (IIRC, someone can correct me if I am wrong) and when they started the engines, pulled the plug and flipped the switch to transfer from external power to internal power (now generated by the smoking J-79's on the Phantom) that there was some stray voltage somewhere that was generated.

That voltage that nobody knew about would have been stopped by the safety pins on the MER/SER, but since they had been pulled, the path to the ordinance was open, even though the master arm switch was off, and...SWOOSH.

That zuni rocket flew across the flight deck, severed a deck hand's arm, and smashed into McCain's 1000 lb centerline drop tank, and fuel began gushing onto the flight deck. Something ignited it (my memory tells me it was not the zuni, which I believe went all the way through it and into the ocean beyond) and the rest is history.

McCain was lucky to survive that. He could have gone up just like some other pilots nearby who never got out of their cockpits.

A great book that I read about this is: "Sailors to The End"

Heh, as for the "Wet Start", that is NOT something people did for fun. It could happen accidentally due to an equipment or an engine malfunction, or it could be caused by pilot or operator error, but I doubt someone would get away with doing it a bunch of times. I was a jet mechanic, and had to get my turn license in order to perform maintenance, and that was one of the things that could get you a fail if you didn't recognize it and turned a wet start into a hot start. You could destroy the plane and get people killed. (Caveat: I worked on A-7 Corsairs, and it is possible the A-4 Skyhawk had a bigger problem with it, but I think the process of avoiding it was pretty much the same across platforms)

That might happen as an accident, and most people might be inclined to overlook it, but if someone did it repeatedly, they would damn well hear about it, including the son of famous admirals. In any case, I don't believe that had anything to do with it.

(For full disclosure, McCain was my Commanding officer for a few months when I was in a training squadron, and after I got out of the training squadron, I did get sent to the VA-46 Clansmen, which was the squadron that McCain was flying in when that happened. But I think what I have said is correct...)

LOL...I guess I should have read all the replies before taking the time to post.

Fact is, there is a lot to dislike about McCain, and it took me years on FR before someone gently changed my mind without sarcasm, vituperation or malediction.

But the truth is the truth, and what you say is the truth. Let’s crucify him for what he is deserving of.

Yes. It is a little unsettling to see people who are so determined to stick a pin in McCain that they would tell themselves some of this stuff and believe it.

It isn’t so, so people should just let it go. I am with you on this.

If I've learned one thing during my brief stint on the site it's that some people will believe anything without checking it out.

My son did a 6 month tour on the Forrestal during the end of the Carter Adm. and beginning of Reagans....the sailors called it the USS Zippo. I believe it caught fire on more than one occasion....The USS Saratoga was the sinking Sarah, one of his buddies sailed on Sarah....

I believe your right about fires on the Forrestal. I think there were about one fire a month. Thanks for commenting.

Could be people think mccain caused it because his plane was the one hit and started the fire, or the second plane that blew up....
