Yep, some genealogy is hard to ferret out. There is so much online, now, that I was almost overwhelmed at the volume of new information that was available for me to add to what I had: which had taken me 20 years to compile.
The rest of it just fell out of the ether. I’m still gathering it up. Mind-boggling.

I am named after Robert the Bruce. Me, too. In fact, as James Robert, I'm named after a number of Scot kings. Family legend has it that there has to be someone named J.R. in every generation. Nobody remembers why, of course.
The family (family, not clan) coat of arms has as motto, I saved the King! UK college of heraldry says that a family member was knighted by The Bruce for rowing him across a river or lake to escape the English some time in the period leading up to Bannockburn.

My husband is from Clan McNaughton on his father's side. Mother's side is also Scot, but through Canada.
The McNaughtens lost their castle due to drink and trickery of the Campbell's and the love of a woman.

“I am named after Robert the Bruce.”
Good thing you weren’t named after the Battle of Bannockburn. :)

I’m Clan MacLaren. My daughter just found out we lost our castle in a drunken bet. I guess it’s a common event. :)
We’re going to the Scottish Renaissance Fair in a few weeks, and were delighted to learn that it’s put on by our clan, and we’ll have a clan tent in which to congregate.

I am clan Douglas and Menzies from way back. Then there is some ‘high’ German and supposedly a full blood Cherokee in that mix. Rumor has it the Douglas clan and the Campbell clan never really saw eye to eye.

I am named after Robert the Bruce.
Since the letter is from the 1300's, we all were named after him.

Aye, the Campbell’s were a bunch of troublemakers and cheats. ;)

Aye, the Campbells were a bunch of troublemakers and cheats. ;) Ok since it is a public forum I will silently smile and NOT disagree.

Robert the Bruce murdered my kinsman, the Red Comyn, and, if I'm not mistaken, had to do penance for that act before he ultimately ascended to the throne.
I might be oversimplifying, but that's my general understanding of the incident...

I come from a long line of horse thieves. But my grandmother’s maiden name is Kirkpatrick and I don’t think it’s Irish. Scottish, maybe?
