Any Alternatives to Yahoo Mail?
06/04/2013 | self

Posted on 06/04/2013 3:47:20 PM PDT by dswyndon

I've been a yahoo e-mail user for over 15yrs and Yahoo has come up with a new policy for users to be implemented sooner than later.

I realize that all communications are now being scanned & archived by the fed gov't but I do feel Yahoo is going above & beyond and really pushing for advertising dollars. It burns me,too,& that's why I want out. I'm not partial to gmail or outlook.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a free email service that is reputable and has a modicum of privacy? I would appreciate your comments and suggetions.

Thanks!

I left gmail for inbox.com a few months ago.

Free and a nice interface.

I have an address at @Reagan.com as does my wife. It does cost a few bucks per year but we receive almost NO JUNK MAIL and still keep the old Yahoo and Gmail accounts open in our names with separate passwords. I am very happy with the Reagan.com account.

if you send an email to a yahoo or gmail from a private sender account it gets scanned and archived anyway.

Google is paying all sorts of attention to what you are sending and receiving. Believe that.

I assume Big Sis is looking at EVERYTHING, particularly if your IP address visits places like FR.

Am I too paranoid?

I’ve been using fastmail.fm for over five years and have never seen an ad.

It is not free, but the cost is minimal for having just great e-mail.

First, ALL email is being archived by the feds.

The only thing you can do is to have an email provider offshore (ex. Runbox).

Don’t be cheap. Pay a bit each year, unless your privacy is worthless.

Good God. I have Yahoo Mail and most of it is spam. If the federal Government wants my mail, have at it....just get rid of the spam. Actually after seeing all the spam, they may just change their minds.

i’m hoping that everyone who has read my post about email privacy understands i’m not paranoid or anything and I certainly have nothing to hide . Email to me is akin to a letter by snail mail; it’s private, for my eyes only.

But now it’s not the case. These big governmental security institutions and scanning, analyzation and archiving of personal correspondence and ALL phone calls - in & out from your cell phone or landline is extremely disturbing.

What has been propositioned by these huge governmental security agencies is all in the name of fighting “terrorism”;that’s their meme, domestic & otherwise. “Key words” count to them but the overreach by big gov’t is effectively creating a police state.

Yahoo & Facebook wants info for advertising& marketing for de-personalisation of human beings. You’re just a set piece of information that can be accessed at any time and
be targeted by the whim & whimsy of any federal official.
If things go forward on the path that has been set forth
by these agencies it really means your imprisonment, your life or death.

imho, the most egregious breach of trust has happened with
this IRS situation and I’m of the firm opinion this goes
all the way to 1600. What is more sinister is the scandals that are encompassing someone who has taken an oath of office to protect & defend the United States of America.

This free-wheeling hustler from Chicago has no intention of doing any such thing and is bent on breaking the backbone of America with fraudulence & evil-mindedness.

As an afterthought I will leave you with this image that appeared in my mind one day upon reflection of what this
whole situation is about and it came to me in a cartoon form as this imposter is the driver of a stagecoach, grinning wildly, whipping a team of frothing and utterly exhausted horses.

Inside the stagecoach were the sins of the world all personified in grotesque faces . Lying, cheating, avarice, duplicity .......all hanging out of the windows of this stagecoach and carrying the rest of an evil dictatorship that no one could imagine the driver laughing all the way while whipping these poor horses as the coach swayed back
and forth on a rutted road.

I’ll end up by saying thanks for everyone’s response & I do apologize for getting a rant in there . Hope my thoughts reach many.

Visa, MasterCharge, your bank, your supermarket (like those “Club member” discounts?) know more about you than the gummint ever will via (alleged) scanning of your junk e-mail! Outta sight, outta mind?

I used fastmail.fm ages ago and the service was excellent - also free, but it sounds like they changed their business model.

Anyway, there is no free lunch. It’s either ads of some sort plus potentially have the emails parsed for keywords and also archived, or pay a few bucks.

I ran a test with a nonsense word in emails to various friends, and then put this word into Google search. Without previous expectation I was surprised to see that emails between me and a friend using Yahoo email showed up in Google. There was about a half page of hits. I told my friends and one sent me this thread on FR so I joined FR in order to post.

I have always assumed nothing on the internet is private, but the path to Google is exceedingly fast, and public. The saddest thing about the new America is the fear to speak freely. But we got over Hitler. We'll get over this.

That sucks. In any event, I assume that every keystroke I’ve made since around Y2K is archived and searchable.
