That last sentence is so tacky!

No possible wins here. They let him go in, he probably dies. A true tragedy. That said, they should have let him try.

That’s not quite what tasers are for.

Police need to stick to their primary responsibilities:

Raising revenue for the Welfare State.

Taxpayers of SA will be paying $$$ in this settlement. You will not win a lawsuit if your actions prevented an infant from being saved. Smart attys right now are telling SAPD to prepare for settlement

Would have used that tazer on the cop in a judicious spot and ran it until the batteries ran flat.

Too much of the necessary information is missing to make a good judgement regarding the degree of risk the father faced in entering to rescue an infant son...

Light smoke conditions? Heavy smoke conditions? Smoke with some fire showing? Structure totally involved in flames? Collapse imminent? These are some of the factors firefighters assess in deciding to enter for fire attack and search/rescue, or go defensive and protect adjacent structures...

Firefighters assess degree of fire involvement, along with condition of the structure, its remaining structural integrity, contents, and location of the person to be rescued (if known) when making that call...And it’s the fire incident commander’s call to make, not a cop’s...If the structure was totally involved in fire when crews arrived, then no entry may have been possible...

But IF it’s true family and emergency crews (firefighters?) arrived on scene at the same time, that begs the question why were firefighters not entering to rescue the boy, IF they had any information he was still inside? If the firefighters were told a kid was still inside, did not enter to search and rescue or attempt an interior attack, but went defensive instead, then the father’s desire to try to rescue his son is very understandable...

A cop stopping a father from rescuing his own child because the police officer decides it’s too risky is a decision above the cop’s pay grade, and outside his area of experise...

38 years a firefighter, a cop would have to shoot me if my kid was inside a burning structure...

Emergency crews and the children's parents arrived on the scene at around that time.

The boy's father tried several times to enter the burning home, but police held him back and ended up tazing him. SAPD said it was for his own safety.

It looks as if the police and emergency crews prevented the father from entering the home while at the same time refused to attempt a rescue themselves. I can ignore their cowardice in refusing to use their publicly funded training to bear any risk themselves. However, their refusal to allow the father to attempt to save his infant son is inexcusable. In my opinion, the father would have been fully justified in using lethal force against those preventing him from attempting to save his son.

I’m glad we never had kids, or have ever had a fire .. not sure how I would have reacted,, but I would probably try to save my neighbor’s kid or grandkid or my own if we did..

Sad, there are no guarantees on what may happen,, regardless the facts tho, neither the kid or the father were able to exercise self-determination in that instance.

Sometimes being part of a ‘civilized’ controlled society is just not an easy thing. Prayers to the father and family.

Since he was disobeying a command by government agents, did they arrest the father who was attempting to save his kid?

Ambivalent here without more info though tasing seems a bit much

Just have grown men hold him back

I have see fires in total immolation in which nothing could be done

Simply not enough info here to warrant a solid opinion on this beyond the taser

And yes....a father should be allowed to die trying....absolutely

I have seen that once in a drowning child case at the old Port Gibson ferry on the lower Mississippi.....we were in ferry line....I was 11 maybe.....LA bank

Daughter fell in playing at ferry ramp....dad dove in.....both drowned....a mighty powerful river she is there in spring

The cops and the fire department's main goal used to be "protect and serve" now it's "protect ourselves."

Public servants my ass.

As a father, the man had every right to attempt to save his son. The cop us guilty of murder and needs to face justice.

First of all. This TV news article is crap. Most TV news reports are so juvenile, that we see better writing from middle schoolers.

More to the point. I call your attention to the REAL STORY as found in the San Antonio Express News....

According to Wallace, Darion's father tried to run back into the burning home to save his son but was restrained when he was shot with a Taser by San Antonio police. A spokesman for SAPD said the infant's body had already been discovered, “and the scene was being processed when (the) male tried to forcibly enter the scene.”

Now, its possible the Express News got the story wrong even worse than KENS-TV. But we do know the parents, the cops and the fire department all arrived on the scene AFTER the fire started, and its safe to assume the SAPD is right: The baby was dead and officials knew it. And when a distraught father tried to risk his life in vain - the cops did the right thing as tazed him.

But that makes for a boring TV news story. So what do TV journo-wanna-be's do? EMBELLISH!

If I died and my kid lived it would be totally worth it.

Mission accomplished.

Garbage can lids make great taser shields.
