Its all over the west coast. Bikers trying to kill themselves by ignoring laws
Every weekend there was not snow on the ground, the spandex-clad potential road kill was out there on a road designed for vehicular traffic clogging it up thinking it was a personal bike trail.
At the time, I was driving a 1995 F-250 with a Powerstroke diesel engine.
As soon as I could get around the arrogant bastards and bitches, I would floor that thing, fire up the turbo and cover them up with black diesel smoke for 1/2 mile.
Carpet tacks loose in the bed made me feel even better.
I'd be very careful about making "seeping generalizations". More than a few cyclist are hardcore conservative (for example, RedDog#1) and more than a few do a relatively good job following the rules of the road (notice several of the "angry driver" post in this thread openly admit to being dangerous, law breaking jerks).
BTW, several friends and I ride because we're in our forties and too old to run 20 or 30-miles a week to stay in shape for military PT test. Might be something to think about.
They're necessary for riding roadbikes since the butt portion has a pad to protect oneself from the narrow and hard carborn fiber seats. The long legged spandex is necessary for cold weather riding since baggy pant legs will get caught in the main pedal sprocket (they have no chain guard like your Schwinn Flyer has).
stupid looking shoes
Equally necessary due to the clip on pedals. The pedals are not your typical pedal but instead, they are small and built to accomodate the slots on the bottom of the shoes. The better shoes have a rigid sole that is usually made out of carbon fiber too......
Here is a typical road bike saddle (seat):

Notice the chain guard where long legged spandex is not required. For the record, this bike has never won any cycling event ever held in the world, let alone the TDF......
Now here is a current road bike with the exposed pedal sprocket, which obviously requires pant legs that will not get caught in the chain.....

With that being said, I agree with your comment, most of the cyclists I have encountered are pretty much elitist dicks and that includes those I have encountered on bike paths where I used to skate with in-line speed skates. The bike path wasn't built to accomodate the road bikes and the roads weren't wide enough to accomodate them either, so what are they gonna do?
The Bay Area is horrible.Few observe any laws.
Can’t stand them!
They believe, like ALL parasitic/welfare-types, that they are ENTITLED to other people looking out for THEM.
Their silly suits are for show.
In Houston they recently passed a law that a car can’t get within 3 feet of a bicycle. Most bicycle riders are a..holes and do not obey any rules of the road. What if they get within 3 feet of me?
Bicyclists are also a menace to pedestrians.
I came within inches of being clobbered by a 2-wheel a*****e who flew up between two lines of cars waiting for a light, while I was crossing the street legally. He blew through the light, almost hit me, and disappeared.
Bicyclist routinely disregard laws and rules....We see them blow though stops signs almost daily.
Moms and dads and kids use the bike lanes we paid tons to provide. The spandex, bullet head fags purposely don't.
Some cyclists are smart and some aren’t. I appreciate the smart ones and I acknowledge them. I abhor the stupid ones, and I tend to let them know also.
No, and YES!
It's not just California. In my town, they come out like mosquitoes every spring, flying in every direction for no apparent reason, causing drivers to dodge and break all over the place. They ride through red lights, don't notice stop signs, and fly from the sidewalk to the road with no warning. They drive right on the painted line of the 50-60 mph road I take home, almost daring drivers to hit them.
So, why do they ride? Do they think they are being "healthy", or that it makes them seem cool? Maybe they can't drive?
All I know is that these people put me, themselves, and others at risk, and I resent it. All we can do is be careful, because all the responsibility seems to rest with the automobile operator.
In California those cyclists have equal priority rights on public roadways.
Technically if there is no bike lane, they can ride in the vehicle lane.
You may not like or approve of that but it is the law.
Not all cyclists are created equal. Some are common sense, and some are arrogant about their rights.
Being both a motorist, and a cyclist on the same roads, I noticed the different perspective. In the car you wonder, why do they drift out into the car lane? On the bike, you wonder why do they come so close to me?
