Posted on 07/27/2013 10:19:47 AM PDT by cradle of freedom

Rawhide is back on tv again on the amc channel. There is a marathon of Rawhide episodes back to back these week followed by western themed movies on Saturdays.

Rawhide is on at 11 am on Saturdays and has been on for a couple of weeks. Head em' up, move 'em out! :^)

Clint is a real standout in Rawhide. He hardly says anything. Doesn’t need to...

Rawhide was on the Western Channel all last year from the first day of the year to the last. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was on six days a week. When it was over, I thought we would go through another long Rawhide drought but then I happened upon it on AMC.

Before it came on the Western Channel it was on FX during 1996. Hadn’t seen anything till the Western’s Channel and I don’t believe that I ever saw it in reruns after the original showing in the sixties.

Eric Fleming came to my high school . We had an assembly. Cool guy. A picture of him in my yearbook. (That papyrus lasts forever)
Forgot Clint Eastwood was in the series.

Fleming died an untimely death, drowned.

The character Pete was played by Sheb Wooley who was an actor best known for singing “The Purple People Eater” in 1958.

Watched the very first 3 or 4 episodes of The Rifleman on Tivo (from AMC) the other day — outstanding. Then they showed the penultimate episode from the last season that was the ultimate stinker. Seemed like a pilot for a new show — Connors had a bit cameo appearance and it seemed like The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres all rolled into a Western.

Never could really get into Rawhide much.

Wow. I have been trying to find information on Eric Fleming for years. Which school did he go to and which year? Could you get his yearbook picture on the internet?

While it is always a good western some Rawhide episodes were truly outstanding, sometimes Eric Fleming was almost scary hard and focused, a grit that we don’t see from modern actors and roles.

Something that no one mentions, is that Rawhide was also a kind of western Twilight Zone, with many spooky mysteries and supernatural plots.

"plots"

Rawhide was one of my favorite westerns, but remember they used to have to churn out 39 episodes a year for many of those shows. So after a few years I'm sure the writers of all those westerns had exhausted about every plot possibility. You can only have so many stories about the drovers fighting Indians, or saving Indians, preventing lynchings, ex-drovers out for revenge on Rowdy or Gil Favor for what happened during the war, bank robbers, etc. So they probably delved into weirder topics just to keep from going crazy.

You are exactly right. Clint Eastwood learned how real men act from Mr. Flemming. Flemming’s death was a real tragedy for modern entertainment. I suspect that Hollywood would be at least marginally more to the right than it is had he lived a normal lifespan.

Rawhide is in the top 5 tv shows in tv history. It may be the best tv show in history.

I can’t even bring myself to watch “The Rifleman” without screaming at the TV.. I worked on that show for 4 episodes in the early days of it’s run.. I got to work with Chuck Connors, up close and personal, and was thrilled to get the opportunity until I got to know him..

He was undoubtedly the most obnoxious, arrogant bastard I have ever worked for.. Next to Jerry Lewis, the worst in Hollywood, in my opinion..

But he’s such a good Dad on the show! Isn’t it amazing how many vile obnoxious people in real life can play their exact opposite persona when acting?

My only problem with AMC for the last number of years is that in an hour’s time you might view 30 minutes of actual movie, if you’re lucky. There are other good channels that aren’t that greedy.

Speaking of Dads, and children, I worked with Danny Kay,(most will not even remember him..LOL) known for his interaction with children on his show, was forced to pay children additional money in an attempt to get them to appear..

He actually hated kids and treated them so bad the word went out to agents not to allow their youngsters to accept contracts to appear, at any price..

That’s true. It’s too bad he hasn’t gotten the recognition that he deserved.
