Beck is a sensationalist self-promoter, and Bush became out of touch after being in D.C. so long.
Plenty of idiots have never had alcohol problems, and plenty of former alcoholics are strong, smart, conservative people.
I don't know if it is correct to imply that Bush was an alcoholic. There was an extended period when he drank too much and if he had not stopped probably he would have had a clear-cut case of alcoholism, but the way that he managed to stop drinking right away when he decided to makes me think he wasn't there yet.
But maybe he just had unusually strong willpower.
