Billy Crystal — from Sha Na Na to Yankee Stadium
The Day ^ | HILLEL ITALIE

Billy Crystal remembers a show in Baltimore, around 1975, when he opened for the '50s revival act Sha Na Na.

He was an unknown comic at the time, an unknown who happened to look exactly like one of Sha Na Na's lead singers, Johnny Contardo.

"I'm introduced and I have no billing," Crystal says during a recent interview. "'Please welcome another star of our show and an up-and-coming new comic ...' That was the '70s. Whenever you heard 'up-and-coming new comic,' it was like 'Ugh.'

The earliest thing I remember Billy Crystal from was an old tv comedy called “Soap”. It was a spoof on soap operas or something, IIRC (I was pretty little at the time).

I also remember when Sha-Na-Na had a syndicated weekly television show.

I thought he was pretty funny as the security guard with Christopher Guest, that said, “I hate it when that happens!”

"Soap” was a lot of fun!

I never cared too much for Crystal's character, but I loved Richard Mulligan. He died way too young. (Also loved Mulligan in SOB, one funny movie)

I saw his show, 500 Sundays, which was funny, although I didn’t care for how he’d changed his story about George W Bush, which I heard him tell originally on the radio back in Sept 2001, about the Yankees.

Ditto that. Wasn't it supposed to be sort of a knockoff of the Monkees show?

Could be. I was pretty little at the time, so I don’t remember all that much about it.
