Gov. Jerry Brown announced Monday he has signed legislation requiring California drivers to stay at least 3 feet away when passing bicyclists.
The proposal from Assemblyman Steven Bradford, D-Gardena, is intended to better protect cyclists from aggressive drivers. It states that if drivers cannot leave 3 feet of space, they must slow down and pass only when it would not endanger the cyclists safety.

It should be illegal for anyone over 16 to ride a bicycle!!
Mine with a Whizzer engine went in the trash on my 16th birthday.
Yeah, how about all those? and licensing of cyclists and registration of bicycles with mandatory plates front and back while we’re at it????
Good idea. If you want to ride an ATV on the road it has to be licensed and “street legal”.
I see road rage fixing this problem.

As a runner and a long ago small motorcycle rider, I think my instincts are pretty good and I try to look out for everybody on the road. However, five houses from me is a four way stop. The cross street is at the bottom of a fairly steep hill (very unusual in this flat country).
Predictably, adult bicycle riders on the cross street always ignore their stop sign. When I see one come whizzing down the hill after I pull to a stop, I make sure I feint a quick start as if I’m going to proceed (as I am legally entitled to do). You should see the change in their expression! It really gets fun when they give me the old Hawaiian Good Luck Sign. I make sure they see me laughing at them. Don’t they understand that if I was drunk, or texting, or talking on the phone, they’d be dead?
awesome, time to put the GoPro on my bicycle and go drive right in front of every last cop car I see, should be real easy to verify distance sufficient for a Citation.
What if I come within 0.00454545455 furlongs of a cyclist? How about if I come within 9 hands of a cyclist? Suppose I come within 29.6296296 attoparsecs of a cyclist?
Lotta perfect drivers in here.
Motor vehicle drivers never, ever run lights, speed, cut people off, pull bone headed stunts to shave 5 seconds off the drive. Nope. Never seen it. Impossible. Doesn’t happen.
Unlike auto drivers, cyclists maim and kill tens of thousands of innocent people every year. Or is it the other way around? I forget.
Who is more of a danger to others - some skinny prick cyclist on a 15lb. plastic bike running a stop sign or some douche in a 4000lb. SUV yakking on a cell doing 45 down a residential street? I saw both on my commute today.
I’ve watched this several times over the past two weeks and laugh every time.

Some crosswalks in our town were actually removed because they found them to have higher accident rates than no crosswalks. So now you’re jaywalking and subject to fine in the same location as before.

I do not know if it is a law in AL/MS but I do that anyway. Just common sense. Just like staying 3’ from parked cars beside the road. Bicycle riders are trying to get something passed that would not allow cars on the Natchez Trace Parkway. I drive on it about every 2 months and I see very few bicycle riders but I do see a lot of motorcyclists. The motorcyclists are ok but bicycle riders are a pain in the neck.
“People who ride bicycles on roads deserve to have the snot scared out of them every moment they are messing up traffic.”
Right on, as the Californiacs say.
Besides, cars are forced to burn up a lot of gasoline just not hitting the obnoxious pieces OS. If bicyclists are so concerned with the earth, why do they force unnecessary increases in emissions?
Ah, nothing like getting out and enjoying the great outdoors.
Do you mind if I “steal” that for the Friday silliness thread?

I don’t speed on residential streets, but I could be talking on the phone, eating a burger, drinking a beer, smoking a cigar, and seducing a virgin, and I’d still be less of a danger to others than bicycle crazies.
I hate Bicycle Nazis!
I get pretty irritated at the aggressive bicyclists. They ride 2 or 3 abreast on narrow roads with no shoulders- roads that actually parallel bike paths ( e.g, Sycolin Rd and the W&OD Trail. )
I would like to see a requirement for them to use standard “slow moving vehicle” placards whenever they’re on the road. I have to when I’m driving my tractor on the road - and I hardly EVER travel two abreast with another tractor.
