No live thread on the game. I've never seen the Cardinals make such stupid decisions.
Yup. Holy cow, wiki already has a Jim Joyce-centric update on the obstruction rule.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obstruction_(baseball)
“Any case of obstruction falls into one of two categories generally called type “A” and type “B”, after the subsection of Official Baseball Rule 7.06,[2] in which each type of obstruction is described.
Type A obstruction occurs when the obstructed runner is being played upon[clarification needed] by the fielders. The ball is immediately dead, and all runners are awarded the base that the umpire judges the runners would have reached without the obstruction; however, the obstructed runner must be awarded at least one base. Umpiring practice grants a broad interpretation of whether a runner is being played upon; if the defense’s actions as a whole are focused on a runner, he qualifies as being played upon for the purposes of determining the penalty for obstruction.
Type B obstruction occurs when the obstructed runner is not being played upon. The ball does not become dead; rather, the umpire calls “That’s obstruction!”, but play is allowed to continue. While play continues, the umpire privately decides what base the obstructed runner would have reached without the obstruction. The obstructed runner is now “protected” until he reaches that base. When playing action stops, the ball will become dead and the runner will be awarded that base if he has not reached it. If he was put out before he reaches that base, that out will be nullified and he will be awarded that base. If the runner reaches that base safely, the obstruction is ignored. If the runner continues past that base, he does so at his own risk, without protection. There is no minimum base award for type B obstruction.”
Don’t know if that has been manipulated already!

Sending bill for new keyboard!
As Forrest sez: "Sh*t Happens ..." - just ask Bill Buckner !!!
Speaking of Buckner, did you know he tried to shoot himself after that game - but the bullet went between his legz ...
Dumb call. the obstruction occurred because the runner left base line to trip over the third baseman. Middlebrooks was outside of the baseline.
No way. Good, gutsy call, clear case of obstruction. Runner had every right to be where he was. Not out of baseline at all.
Exactly. The obstruction undoubtedly affected the play. Good call.
VeRy exciting game between two well-matched teams. Great defensive plays. And what an ending! I’v never seen that before.
Cards win 5-4 on a game-ending obstruction call. Amazing!
Well, he does play for the Red Sox.
I have done some amateur umpiring, and that call is correct. The “leg lift” that Middlebrooks did is the obstruction.
Didn’t look like he lifted his legs up to trip him up, in my opinion, just looked like he was trying to get up. That doesn’t matter, him just laying there like a boneless chicken would have been enough to call obstruction if the runner had to step over him.
And for some reason the Cardinals like to play fruity euro-gay techno dance music in their clubhouse after a world series win.

I once saw (in person) the Dodgers win a game due to catcher interference. That's not the strange part. The offending catcher was Johnny Friggin' Bench!!!
The call was 100% right.
The call was 100% wrong! Controversial in the least, and umps and refs should never decide games, especially big games. The guy was out at the plate. Boston got robbed. . . . besides which, the same ump all night long called pitches below the knees “strikes” for the SL pitchers, the opposite for the Sox. Bias in the extreme.
One way or the other, the Umpire was going to decide the game, even he ruled no obstruction, in a way he is still impacting the game.
Watch closely and you will also see that the runner pushed Middle brooks back down as he was trying to get up.
impacting because he is the ump, but not deciding. Why play at all?
This is true. Middlebrooks was stretched out on the ground and yet his feet were still some distance from the base line. Thus, it was not obstruction at all. Horrendous call.
It was a terrible call in my opinion. And the runner was outside of the baseline. He tripped over the upper part of his legs which were flat on the ground. A home field “advantage” call if there ever was one.
except that the runner was NOT in the base line.
And the runner was outside of the baseline.
You might want to read up on the difference between the baseline and the basepath.
I'll wait...
