Each feather in a war bonnet symbolizes a single act of courage in the face of death and destruction- and no, fielding crowds of sweaty, irritable shoppers to buy a fake headdress at Spirit Halloween doesn’t count. War bonnets are more akin to Purple Hearts. Wow! So I guess the peaceful Native Americans who never waged war on each other only created the War Bonnet after the evil Europeans arrived.

The traditional clothing we wear is called regaliaSorry, sweetie, it's not.
Regalia refers to the symbols and ornaments worn by a king, as it's from the Latin rex.
What you wear is called a traditional costume, and just about every ethnic group on earth has one or more. But most of them don't get their loincloths all bunched up over someone else wearing or imitating it.

Needs more cow-bell.
She’s in a position to know better than I do, but doesn’t mention that the Plains Indian headdress was worn in modern times by other tribes who had never worn it, as an expression of American Indian identity, in a somewhat similar way to Celts like the Welsh and Cornish wearing kilts.
