My phone based GPS position locator works in the wilderness, even without cell reception. I’ve always wondered how it was capable of doing this.

GPS works off a satellite & has nothing to do with the cellular network. But it’s receive-only, not two-way.

Your phone has a GPS receiver in it which is independent of the cellular network. The phone does report its location to the network when connected.
