Winamp Shutting Down On December 20
Slashdot ^ | 11/20/2013

Posted on 11/20/2013 6:00:42 PM PST by markomalley

New submitter Cid Highwind writes "If you want to download the latest version of Winamp, you'd better do it soon. According to a new banner on the download page, AOL will be pulling the plug on the iconic llama-whipping music player in a month. 'Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download. Please download the latest version before that date. See release notes for latest improvements to this last release. Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years.' Ars Technica ran an article last year detailing how the music player lost its dominance."

Thanks for the web info, mate! Appreciate it, especially now that I am working on a couple of older computers at work. Might come in handy.

Cool. One of the early versions of Itunes plus another bit of software would allow you to remove the DRC so that it could be converted mp3 and played on a non Apple player.

I am not trying to rip Apple off, either. Just wanted the portability.

My wife or son wiped it out by accepting the upgrade. Lol.

WinAmp is still around? Haven't used it since the early nineties, and it's not listed as far as I can recall on any of the main linux repositories.

I'm pretty sure "Audacious" has a 'winamp' mode, where you can make it look just like classic Winamp and thus Kick The Llama's Ass.

I noticed it when experimenting with different players. Ended up sticking with Rhythmbox, because I like the search and que management facilities better.

I mess with winamp 3, but my computer at the time didn’t like the script based app.

Pace maker allows you to slow down the song or selection in Loop Master without changing the pitch so you can hear each note. Very handy. They are kind of touchy though. I had to go back to an older version of Winamp to get them to be stable.

Options ==> Preferences ==> Plug-ins ==> DSP/Effect and you should see it. I think if you load it from there it should start up each time thereafter.

Stone the crows! Seriously wish I had had something like that when I was first learning guitar. Definitely need to play with that some then and try it on some favourite tunes later. Thanks for the info, mate, I mean it!

I love CoolPlayer. Been using it for years for audio files.

Free, *very* lightweight & easy to use. Never had any complaints with it. Plays a large variety of audio files.

You can use skins, I’ve never bothered.

I think only under W98SE did it become relatively stable and did not automatically ignore it, but you had to have the specific drivers for each device or it would complain on every boot-up unless you listed it under "unknown devices - disabled" in the Hardware Listing.

Yes, first 3.1 then 95 and then W/98se of nostalgic memories. Used the latter for years (till about 2005). Illegal Operations! Blue Screens. Dangerously low on system resources! Which i often was, so i used FreeRAM XP which had an option that warned me when i got about 10%.

Then there was the search for drivers. It kept the forums busy, but it was very manageable, and quite the improvement over its predecessors. No need to mention W/ME. And XP still is very viable, esp on old laptops. Got lots of use, and i thank God i could use all of them - and for free dial up till about 2005.

I have W/8.1 now, as early on NewEgg had it for 29.00 (w/ rebate card) as a XP64 bit upgrade, then i transferred it from the old PC to this one: you can legally do that with it.

Plan to put a copy of Linux on the old 2.8 dual core i used for about 6 years.

Use an older version of Winamp which you can get here
That is a link to www.oldapps.com/winamp.php
I am using V 5.6 which runs those two plug ins quite well.

Like it. I love watching movies or listening to podcasts/talks at faster speed without losing the audio. The quality is great and most movies need editing. I watched World War Z at 1.2 and it was just right.

Running 5.6 right now, with Loop Master and PaceMaker plugins. The BEST way to learn how to play guitar leads of your favorite songs.

Wish I had known

Youtube is ok.
