A Boeing Dreamlifter cargo jet, with a cargo hold among the largest by volume, accidentally landed at the wrong airport in Kansas Wednesday night, and was unable to take off due to the short runway. According to KWCH News, this type of plane requires 9,200 feet to take off whereas the runway at the airport is only 6,101 feet.

Googlemaps shows how Wichata and KC are just peppered with airports.
It surprised me.

They could carry just the law-mandated 30 minute reserve fuel plus taxiing fuel and an extra 15 minutes worth), remove the seats and anything else extra, and take off at night. When holding at the numbers ready for take off, gun the engines to takeoff power with the brakes on and then let them go.
It could work.

Now that would be cool! JATOs on the Dreamliner for that much needed assist.

Love this tweet.
“Emergency dispatchers confirm Boeing is bringing in a tug to turn around the #dreamlifter at Jabara. It’s going 10 mph near 21st & Webb.”

Remember the JATO rocket car urban myth?
‘See the USA, in your Chevrolet!’ And Kansas in a few minutes.
Anyone ever on I-70 west of Abilene at O300 wished for jet assist:
straight as an arrow, flat as a pancake.

Him and his Raiders had a huge assist. His airfield was moving into the wind and the planes were a LOT smaller than this giant sitting at the wrong airport. But I like the idea of using JATO. How cool would that look, a huge modified 747 getting blasted off the ground with auxilliary rockets. It would be a neat experiment. Thing is, are there currently JATO devices big enough to do this job? This beats that C-17 that landed at the wrong airport a year or two ago.

It would be awesome to watch them strap on a couple of JATO units and see but its probably not the type of situation where you go “let’s try THIS and see what happens”
